LETTER: Watertown Schools Have Asbestos, Air Flow Problems

This past week, the Massachusetts Department of Education & Secondary Education (DESE) conducted an audit on the Watertown Public Schools and the District’s decision to delay opening the buildings for in-school/hybrid learning. At this moment, no details have been provided to Town residents as to what the audit yielded. Information requests to the DESE have been unanswered. All the details residents know (via a ZOOM call), is that Superintendent Galdston spoke to DESE Commissioner Riley (or an associate) and that the conversation was short with few questions (according to Galdston). So what were the DESE findings and why haven’t the Middle School and High School opened yet?

Parents Advocate for Earlier Start for Hybrid Learning at Watertown Schools

The following letter is part of a petition asking the Watertown Public Schools to move the start of hybrid learning at Watertown Middle School from Nov. 30 to the week of Nov. 9. Last week, the School Committee discussed making that change in the district’s plan to move into hybrid learning, but did not vote on that. They left it up to Superintendent Dede Galdston and the School Administration.

Council Moves Polling Place from Senior Housing to Middle School

After hearing from many people worried about having voters coming into a senior apartment building during the 2020 elections, the Town Council voted to move the polling location to Watertown Middle School. A temporary location for Precincts 11 and 12 is needed because the normal voting location, Cunniff Elementary School, is under construction. School construction at Hosmer Elementary School also impacted Precinct 2, which will move to the Hellenic Cultural Center. The locations will be used for the Sept. 1 State Primary and the Nov.

Banners in Watertown Square Feature Student Artwork, Tell Tales of Migration

One of the banners now hanging in Watertown Square. This one features the artwork of Hosmer School students and show their families’ migration story. The following information was provided by the creators of the Watertown Square Banners Project:

The next time you travel through Watertown Square take a few minutesto admire the colorful new banners hanging on poles throughout the square. They were the brainstorm of local graphic designer Carole Katz and feature works developed by students from the Hosmer School and the Watertown Middle School. Driving through the square one day Katz decided the square needed some colorful banners to replace the current historical banners (that she designed) that have been hanging for several years now.

Watertown’s Effort to Bring MLK’s Teachings to Schools Honored at Unity Breakfast

The Watertown High six students who received the Unity Award for their work spreading Kingian Non-violence teachings to WHS. The people who brought the teachings of Martin Luther King Jr. to the Watertown schools and the community came together, and were honored during the the 20th annual Watertown Unity Breakfast on Monday. The annual celebration on Martin Luther King Jr. Day has been put on by the World in Watertown for two decades, and at the 2020 breakfast the local efforts to teach the principles of Kingian Non-violence in town were at the forefront. The keynote speaker was one of those who trained Watertown teachers, students and police about applying King’s non-violence teachings today, and the Unity Award went to six students who spread MLK’s teachings to Watertown High School.

Watertown Event Features “Dreamer” Who Spoke About Undocumented Children in Congress

A woman who marched from Florida to Washington, D.C., to testify before Congress on behalf of “Dreamers,” that helped lead to the passage of the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) legislation. Gaby Pacheco will speak at Watertown Middle School on Jan. 16 at the Watertown Anti-Bias Coalition event, “Undocumented + Unafraid: Lessons from a Dreamer.” The Watertown Middle School Chorus will also perform that evening, which is part of the town’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day activities. The Anti-Bias Coalition formed after antisemitic symbols were found at two of the Watertown Schools.

WMS’s Kingian Nonviolence Program Expanding to More Watertown Schools

An effort to teach students and teachers about Dr. Martin Luther King’s nonviolence teachings that began four years ago at Watertown Middle School has now spread to all the Watertown Public Schools. Organizers hope that the program can get regular financial support to keep it going. Over the years, the Kingian Nonviolence teaching has spread from a small group of students at Watertown Middle School to include more teachers, Watertown Police officers and town residents. Now WMS offers a class focusing on the subject, and students from the middle school have sought to spread it to the other schools in town.
