Belmont Savings Bank announced its sponsorship of the first-ever Becca Pizzi Family Fun Run on Sunday, April 10. The 5K race is in recognition of Belmont native Becca Pizzi’s accomplishment as the first U.S. woman to complete the World Marathon Challenge, in addition to serving as a special sendoff celebration for Pizzi and other runners competing at this year’s Boston Marathon.

The race will begin and end at Belmont High School track. Registration and bib pick-up begins at 7:30 a.m., with the 5K beginning at 9 a.m., with the 1-mile kid’s race starting at 9:05 a.m. T-shirts will be given to the first 200 runners participating in the 5K with all proceeds from the event going to the Becca Pizzi Scholarship Fund, via the Belmont Boosters.

“Becca is a remarkable role model to young Belmont residents through her tireless drive and emphasis on hard work and healthy exercise,” said Bob Mahoney, president and chief executive officer, Belmont Savings Bank. “Given her efforts working with children, and record setting athletic achievements, we are honored to sponsor the first ever Becca Pizzi Family Fun Run, and look forward to supporting it for many years to come.”

Earlier this year, Pizzi completed the 2016 World Marathon Challenge, participating in seven marathons on seven continents in seven days. The 35-year-old business owner, manager, and mother held the fastest time in the women’s category and placed third overall. Pizzi attributed her success to the support of her family, friends, and the town of Belmont. Belmont Savings Bank provided Becca with a donation to her charity of choice, the Belmont Food Bank, and hosted both send-off and welcoming events.

“I want to once again thank Belmont Savings for their generous support, as they have graciously given many resources to ensure Belmont families can follow my races- and now- participate in one themselves,” said Pizzi. “The April 10th5K and 1-mile kids race are wonderful opportunities for the Belmont community to come together and enjoy fun, recreational exercise, and I hope to see everyone there.”

Previously, Mahoney presented Pizzi with a citation presentation on behalf of the governor during the February 4thhomecoming parade ceremony. Pizzi plans to run her sixteenth Boston Marathon this April.

“Alongside Belmont Savings Bank, we are happy to recognize a wonderful Belmontonian, and exemplary local athlete, Becca Pizzi,” said Curtis Cole, vice president, Belmont Boosters. “We encourage families and runners alike to participate in the upcoming Becca Pizzi Family Fun Run, as proceeds will provide scholarships for Belmont athletes. Becca is a true inspiration to us all for completing this once in a lifetime endeavor.”

Awards and activities will take place after the race at Belmont High School track, which is located at 221 Concord Ave, in Belmont. Registration for the event can be found at Racewire.com including a fee of $25 for adults and $10 for children.
