Winter Programs for Kids Hosted by the Recreation Department

Watertown children can join a variety of programs put on by the Recreation Department this winter, including skiing, floor hockey and the community sports and games weekend

The Recreation Department sent out the following information:

Wachusett Mountain Ski-Board Program

Who: Grades 6 – 12

Description: This program is designed to provide middle and high school students with a fun and safe atmosphere to learn elements of skiing or boarding or to improve their skills. All participants must wear helmets while skiing or boarding. Space is limited on the bus provided by the recreation department. Please register early. All participants’ parents must register online with Wachusett Mountain. Please register for the transportation with Watertown Recreation. Registration is on first come first serve basis Maximum: 100 for transportation only

When: Saturday Evenings
January 4 – February 8, 2020
(Meets once a week for 6 weeks)

Time: 4:00pm – 11:00pm
Where: Bus leaves The WPS Superintendent’s Office parking lot at 31 Marshall Street at 4:00pm, SHARP

Fee: Register online with Wachusett Mountain on their website www.wachusett.com/schoolgroups for lift ticket, equipment and lessons.

Price through 12/4/19: $146.00 (This includes a $20 weekend evening charge) Price after 12/4/19: $160.00 (This includes a $20 weekend evening charge) Select Optional Items: Lessons, Equipment Rentals, Insurance, Freestyle, COW Card

Register online www.recreation.watertown-ma.gov for bus transportation. Fee is $150.00. Please submit “Town of Watertown” waiver/insurance form (available by clicking here).

Community Sports and Games

Who: School-age children, families & siblings, Adults (Watertown residents only)

Description: Bring a friend or family member to shoot hoops, play a game of volleyball or just get ready for the upcoming baseball/softball season in our batting cages. In addition, there will be arts & crafts and board games. It is a great option for those rainy or snowy Sundays. Please check attached schedule for times and activities.

When: Sundays

December 8, 2019 – April 5, 2020
No adult programming on 2/2/20
No program on 3/8/20

Time: 2:00pm – 7:00pm (See attached schedule)
Where: Watertown High School Gym
Fee: $15 for youth (ages 5 – 17) $30 for adults (ages 18 and older)

Cops & Rec Middle School Floor Hockey

Who: Grades 6 – 8

Description: This program will consist of drills, scrimmage and games. Consistent teams will be selected for a tournament league format. After the teams are formed, a schedule of games will be played beginning the following week. The focus of the program is to provide a fun, positive atmosphere while teaching the sport of floor hockey and the excitement of being a part of a team. Registration is on first come first serve basis Maximum 40 students

When: Tuesdays

November 19, 2019 – January 14, 2020
(Meets once a week for 7 weeks)
No Class on 12/24, 12/31

Time: 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm, 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm on 11/19/19 for early dismissal

Where: Middle School Small Gymnasium

Fee: $25.00 Residents Only

Floor Hockey

Who: Grades K – 5

Description: The general objectives of the program are to promote sportsmanship and teamwork in a fun and positive setting. Participants will have the opportunity to learn the rules and fundamentals of floor hockey such as stick handling and shooting. Registration is on first come first serve basis. Maximum of 16 participants for K and 1st/ Maximum of 24 participants for 2nd to 5th

When: Saturdays, December 7, 2019 – February 15, 2020 (Meets once a week for 10 weeks) No program on 12/28/19

Time: Grade 1: 9:00am – 10:00am
Grade K: 10:15am – 11:15am
Grades 2 – 3: 11:30am – 12:30pm
Grades 4 – 5: 12:45pm – 1:45pm

Where: Hosmer Small Gymnasium Grades K – 1
Hosmer Large Gymnasium Grades 2 – 5

Fee: $60.00 Residents $90.00 Non-Residents

Wrestling Program

Who: Grades: 1 – 8

Description: This program introduces children to traditional wrestling. Priority will be on basic skills of balance, strength, discipline, and technique while having fun. Dual meets and scrimmages will be scheduled outside of the practice dates. No Tournaments. Registration is on a first come first serve basis Maximum of 30 participants

When: Wednesdays

December 4, 2019 – February 12, 2020
No Class on 12/25/19, 1/1/20

Time: 6:00 – 7:00 pm for Grades 1 – 4, 7:15 – 8:15 pm for Grades 5 – 8

Where: Watertown High School Wrestling Room

(Located down the gym stairs next to the locker rooms)

Fee: $50.00 Residents Only
