James DeMarco grew up in Watertown and became a goaltender at age 5. It’s his life’s passion to stand between the pipes and keep the puck out of the net. Combining this with the love of cartooning Small Saves emerged in 1991 and took on a life of his own. “To play goal–then come home and draw Small Saves — is my ideal definition of a good day.”
Watertown’s results on the 2022 MCAS generally look good, and the scores at two schools look very positive, Superintendent Dede Galdston told the School Committee on Oct. 24. The results of the MCAS, the state’s standardized test, and other measures used by the district will be discussed at a pair of upcoming School Committee meetings in early November. “The (Watertown) Middle School percentiles went way up as well as at the Lowell (Elementary),” Galdston said. “Everyone else did great, don’t get me wrong.

Watertown Youth Hockey will run Learn to Skate and Learn to Play programs for youngsters just getting on the ice and those looking to get into the sport. Both programs begin in November and take place at John A. Ryan Arena, 1 Paramount Place, Watertown. Watertown Youth Hockey President Jason Tourville said the beginners classes are key to building the hockey program in town. After numbers dipped several years ago, the program is on the rise in recent years.
The works of Martha Chason-Sokol and Joe Caruso will be shown at Storefront Art Projects’ exhibit called “Found Meaning.” Storefront Art Projects provided the following information about its upcoming show, called “Found Meaning”:
Dining room chairs, a discarded faucet, a metal dish rack, cd holders, old pants, old sandals, plastic shopping bags, white paper, blue tape, gray and black electrical tape, pantyhose, styrofoam, suction cups, leather, gauze, ping pong balls, wire, tin cans, yarn, acrylic paint, glue, thread, and cotton balls.

Through Halloween and the dark days of fall, Martha Chason-Sokol and Joe Caruso, present an array of colorful, monstrous, and humorous paintings and sculpture at Storefront Art Projects. Martha and Joe are kindred spirits who have never shown together before. Martha works with household items, tape, and packing materials in a wry commentary on our current values and priorities. Joe makes sculpture with clay and found materials and raucously bright paintings.

The Watertown Department of Public Works invites the public to a meeting on the Upper Saltonstall Park project, with a site walk prior to the meeting. The Upper part of the park is area where the hill sits, near Main Street. The meeting takes place on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 5:30 p.m. in the 3rd Floor Conference Room in City Hall, 149 Main St., Watertown. The site walk will take place at Saltonstall Park at 4:30 p.m., weather permitting.
St. Stephen’s Armenian Apostolic Church announced it is looking forward to welcoming community members to its 66th annual bazaar. The traditional gathering is the church’s largest fundraiser of the year and will be held on Friday, November 4 (10 am – 8 p.m.) through Saturday, November 5 (10 a.m. – 7 p.m.). This year, the church is returning to its original gathering place for this event—in the church hall at 1 Artsakh Street. Volunteers have been busy preparing for months.

Talented Watertown residents from grade school to veteran performers showed off a range of talents on the stage at the River Green at Arsenal Yards Wednesday night during the first annual Watertown’s Got Talent contest. The event raised money for the Watertown Community Foundation, and the three winners took home prize packs.
