Watertown Police commended a 20-year-old man for helping a driver who was experiencing a medical emergency, and preventing any additional injuries and damage.

Wellington Soares acted swiftly when he came upon an emergency situation at Arsenal Yards, according to a statement by Watertown Police Chief Justin Hanrahan.

“On Aug. 17, 2025, Mr. Soares was outside Chipotle on Arsenal Yards Boulevard when he noticed a vehicle drifting across lanes before striking a sidewalk planter,” Hanrahan’s statement said. “Recognizing that the operator was experiencing a medical emergency, Mr. Soares immediately ran to assist.”

Soares told WCVB Channel 5: “Something told me to just go. It’s an emergency, someone is not OK.”

He made sure the man did not swallow his tongue, and prayed to Jesus to save the young man, who reminded him of his own brother, according to WCVB.

The Watertown Police Department recognized Soares for his life-saving efforts on social media.

“Thanks to his swift and selfless actions, additional injuries and damage were prevented. Mr. Soares’ courage and attentiveness exemplify the very best of our community,” Hanrahan’s statement said. “Mr. Soares’ action remind us of the power of community, and the difference one person can make.”
