Council Moves Polling Place from Senior Housing to Middle School

After hearing from many people worried about having voters coming into a senior apartment building during the 2020 elections, the Town Council voted to move the polling location to Watertown Middle School. A temporary location for Precincts 11 and 12 is needed because the normal voting location, Cunniff Elementary School, is under construction. School construction at Hosmer Elementary School also impacted Precinct 2, which will move to the Hellenic Cultural Center. The locations will be used for the Sept. 1 State Primary and the Nov.

Wednesday’s Watertown Concert Has Been Cancelled

Town officials announced that the outdoor concert planned for Wednesday, Aug. 12 has been cancelled due to expected thunderstorms.

The concert planned for Saltonstall Park featuring Southbound Train will not be rescheduled. “We will have them back next year though!” the announcement from the Town said. There are still two more concerts in the Watertown Summer Concert Series.

Applications for Senior Tax Work Off Program Available

The Town of Watertown will accept applications from seniors looking to work off the some of their property tax bill. See information distributed by the Town about how to qualify and to apply below. Dear Resident,

This program allows for up to ten Watertown residents: Seniors (age 60 and older) or Veterans, a $1,500 deduction from their property tax bill in exchange for 118 hours of work for a Town department, from July 1, 2020 until March 1, 2021. (Based on $12.75 per hour State minimum wage for all positions.)

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Town departments are continuing to determine what types of positions would be available for this year, and the program may be modified or canceled at any time, but please apply now if you are interested and we will work to identify an appropriate position for you should you qualify. At this time, there is immediate need for work with the Town Clerk’s office for the upcoming Elections and with various Town departments for shredding and administrative work.

State Rep. Candidates Appearing on Chamber Forum

The candidates running for the 10th Middlesex District seat in the State House will be appearing on a free online forum hosted by the Newton-Needham Regional Chamber of Commerce. The district includes parts of Watertown, Waltham and Newton, including Precincts 10, 11 and 12 on the westside of Watertown. John Lawn of Watertown is the incumbent, and he is being challenged by Newton City Councilor Alison Leary. The Newton Needham Chamber sent out the following annoucment:

Council Preview: Proposed Polling Places Changes, Water/Sewer Rates, Noise Ordinance

Watertown residents cast their ballots at Watertown Town Hall in the Massachusetts Presidential Primary. Early voting runs through Friday. The Town Council will discuss proposed changing the locations of three poling places for this fall’s elections on Tuesday. The agenda also includes the vote on the water/sewer rates. Beforehand, a Council subcommittee will discuss proposed changes to the Noise Ordinance.

Part of Filippello Park Closed for 2 Weeks, More Construction Coming

Filippello Park. The Watertown Recreation Department announced further closing of part of Filippello Park due to ongoing construction work, and another project will begin in the fall. The following information was sent out by Recreation Director Peter Centola:

The Filippello (Arlington) section of Filippello Park closure has been extended and will not be open to the public and all users until Friday, August 28 at 6:00pm due to the installation of new field lighting system. This includes the field, walking track, tot lot / playground and table and grill areas within the Filippello (Arlington) section of the park. The contractor is performing conduit trenching through next Friday August 14th.

July 28, 8:14 p.m.: A man from Waltham who works at a gas station on Mt. Auburn Street reported getting into a physical altercation with a co-worker. On July 23, he and another man got into an argument about getting in each other’s personal space. The man said he was pushed and fell, then the co-worker punched him in the face and chest.
