The three people vying to be Watertown High School’s new principal were interviewed by Superintendent Dede Galdston last week, and Watertown Cable was there. Galdston said she hopes to make an appointment before the beginning of February Vacation. Each of the finalists came in a different day late last week. Watertown Journalist, Teacher Being Honored at South by Southwest

John Vitti, center, will receive a Community Service Award at the South by Southwest festival in March for his work with school newspapers in Watertown and many other communities. Here he is shown with students on Watertown Splash, the newspaper at Watertown Middle School. John Vitti’s professional life has been all about journalism, and since his children’s elementary school days he has shared his love and knowledge for reporting with students in Watertown. An editor with the Boston Globe, Vitti helped create the school newspapers at all five of Watertown’s public schools, and his venture now stretches more than 125 schools around the Boston area. For his work, he will receive a Community Service Award at South by Southwest Conference in Austin, Texas, in March.

Restaurant with Caribbean, Mediterranean Fare Heading to Watertown

A restaurant featuring a mix of Caribbean and Mediterranean fare appears headed to the Pleasant Street area on the westside of Watertown. Sharp-eyed Twitter user Sean Graham spotted the sign for Nzuko on the side of the building at 60 Howard Street, just off Pleasant Street. @MarcHurBoston Apparently @nzukorestaurant will be coming to Howard St. in Watertown pic.twitter.com/v3TRO4GAmG— Sean Graham (@grahams) January 28, 2020

Nzuko started in Framingham in 2016, and also has a location in the Natick Mall. The name means “gathering” in Nigerian, and the restaurant’s website says, “All of our dishes are always sourced organically and fresh, and prepared with global recipes that promote nutrition and health.

Dance Classes for Kids, Adults Available Through Watertown Recreation

Watertown Recreation has teamed with a local dance studio to offer classes in ballroom, line dancing and a kids dance camp with various styles. Watertown Recreation provided the following information. Aladdin Kids Dance Camp

Come learn fun Dance/Broadway/Hip Hop routines to “One Jump” and “Prince Ali” from Aladdin. This course will allow students to learn beginner/intermediate age appropriate choreography, try different styles of dance, enhance presentation skills, learn the basics of being on stage, and gain self-confidence. No experience necessary.

Police Log: Detectives Recover Stolen Items in Sting, Thief Foiled by iCloud

The following information was provided by the Watertown Police Department. Arrests

Jan. 22, 1:02 p.m.: An officer spotted a driver going the wrong way down Edward Road, which is a one-way road. When they checked the man’s record, police found he was wanted on two warrants issued by the Wilmington Police Department for traffic offenses: unlicensed driving and speeding. The 48-year-old Nashua man was arrested on the warrants.

Universal PreK in Watertown: the Superintendent Would Like to See That

Watertown Superintendent Dede Galdston spoke at the 2020 Unity Breakfast about her desire to have universal PreK. Equity has been a big push for the Watertown Public Schools, and Superintendent Dede Galdston said that part of giving students an equal opportunity is to provide universal Pre-kindergarten to the students of Watertown. Galdston spoke of universal PreK during her talk a the 2020 Watertown Unity Breakfast, of which she was the honorary host. She said Martin Luther King Jr. not only inspired her with his Civil Rights work, but also in his study of education. “Why not give every child equal opportunity to start school at an equal level?”

Developer Defends Watertown After Globe Article Poo Poos Town as Biotech Destination

It appeared as part of an ad taken out by Boylston Properties defending Watertown as a biotech destination after a Boston Globe article that said Kendall Square is the place to be. The owners of Arsenal Yards leapt to the defense of Watertown after a Boston Globe published an article about biotech bigwigs snubbing the town as a place to set up business. The Jan. 26 Boston Globe article interviewed biotech execs and investors who said that Cambridge’s Kendall Square remains the place to be.
