Many Berkeley Street residents rely on the parking lot at the end of the street because their homes do not have driveways. Often people going to Filippello Park are parked in the spots, too. Residents of a small neighborhood tucked off Arlington Street near Filippello Park seek relief from scarcity of parking and other problems associated with a gate leading to Filippello Park. Tuesday night the a joint meeting of the Town Council’s Public Works and Human Services Committee met to start the process of finding a solution for the problems of residents of Berkeley and Clarendon streets. The problems date back to 1999 when a gate was opened giving the public access to Filippello Park near the area where the two streets come together at a parking area, known as Glen Circle.
The Watertown Community Foundation invites you to join the 9th annual Town-wide Spelling Bee. The Spelling Bee is open to all elementary school students in grades 1-5. Residents learned about proposed changes to MBTA service in and around Watertown on Monday night at the Watertown Police Station. MBTA officials visited Watertown Monday night to talk about changes to bus routes, increasing T fares and offering new ways for riders to pay fares. Those who attended the open house at the Watertown Police Station’s Community Room were eager to see ways the public transit system could be improved. Changing Routes
One of the biggest topics of interest was the MBTA’s proposals to change to routes in efforts to make them more efficient and reliable. Among the routes that are part of the Better Bus Project are the 70/70A and the express buses that come and go from Watertown Yard.
The Watertown Youth Coalition will host a Town Hall Meeting to present the results of the Well Being of Watertown Youth survey, and a theatrical presentation. Along with the presentation of the survey results of the Watertown Youth Coalition Peer Leaders will make their theatrical debut with the Improbable Players. The developer of a home on the Southside of Watertown which had upset neighbors has changed directions and torn down a controversial garage. Neighbors appealed to Town Officials in January after a two-story garage went up about five feet from the rear property line. Construction stopped and recently the developer met with residents to come up with a new plan. Assistant Town Manager Steve Magoon said the owner of the property, Brian Connaughton, agreed to pull down the parts of the garage that had gone up and replace it with a shorter structure. “It will still be a garage, but it won’t go nearly as high,” Magoon said.
Watertown senior Mange Camara won the 300 meters at the New England Indoor Championships. Two Watertown High School students showed they are among the top track and field athletes in region with top five finishes at the New England Indoor Championships, including a first place finish. On Saturday, WHS senior Mange Camara competed in two events — the 55 dash and the 300 meters at the meet held at Boston’s Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center, and senior Abbi Peterson took on the best high jumpers from around New England. Camara took first place in the 300 meters, with a time of 34.47 — which was 0.4 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
