North Section Champs! Raiders Score Late to Beat Manchester-Essex

NORTH ANDOVER — The Watertown High School field hockey team had precious few chances in the North Section final on Saturday, but the Raiders converted a second half corner for the game winner against Manchester-Essex. The victory gives Watertown (20-0-1) 11 straight Section crowns, and the team is seeking its 10th straight State Championship. The Raiders’ title hopes, however, looked shaky for much of the battle of undefeated teams.

The Hornets (16-1-5) controlled the play in the first half and the beginning of the second.  Manchester-Essex had five corners in the first half, while the Raiders had none. The Hornets hit the post on one shot, but sophomore goalie Elaine Andrade and the Watertown defense kept the ball out of the net. In the second half the Raiders survived more offensive waves from Manchester-Essex, which got two more corners and twice played with an extra player after a Raiders’ player was carded.

Catch a Big Band Tribute to the Veterans Featuring the World Famous Hal McIntyre Orchestra

The Town of Watertown presents A Musical Tribute to Veterans through the Decade, announced the Veterans Services Office. A free event featuring the World famous Hal McIntyre Orchestra featuring Watertown’s own Don Pentleton Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018 at Watertown Middle School, 68 Waverley Ave., Watertown, from 7–9:30 p.m. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Pentleton, a Watertown High School graduate, played drums with the Glen Miller Band, the Guy Lombardo Orchestra, and with Skitch Henderson, Ella Fitzgerald and comedians Phyllis Diller, Pat Cooper, Frankie Fontaine, and Georgie Jessel. Watertown Wins Thrilling Field Hockey North Semi in Double Overtime

READING  — In the unfamiliar position of facing elimination from the State Tournament, Watertown High School’s field hockey team rallied in the second half of the North Section semifinal and scored a goal in the second overtime to beat Lynnfield 2-1, Thursday night. The Raiders have won nine straight MIAA Div. 2 State Championships, and rarely trailed along the way. The Pioneers, however, did not lie down for defending champs. While the Raiders had controlled most of the play through the game, it was the Pioneers who scored first with 19:27 left in the second half when Ashley Barrett scored on a pass from Brianna Barrett.

Parents, Neighbors Have Concerns About Proposal for Cunniff School Renovation

Parents and neighbors of Cunniff Elementary School got a look at what the school might look like after the renovation project is done, and they had some big questions and concerns about the loss of play area, drop off areas and more. 

Wednesday night the School Building Committee visited the school on the Westside of Watertown to discuss the upcoming renovation and addition of the campus. The board has upcoming meetings planned for Hosmer and Lowell schools. The current favored plan calls for keeping the front classroom wing at Cunniff, tearing down the one-story wing in back and replacing it with a two story wing. Along with classrooms, the project will add a full-size gym, expand the library, and create a music/blackbox theater space, said architect Scott Dunlap of Ai3 Architects. The classrooms in the existing wings will undergo major renovations.

Watertown Youth Leaders Attend Summit on Tobacco-Related Issues

Young leaders of The 84 Movement from the Watertown Youth Coalition attended the Youth Power Summit on October 27, 2018 at the UMass Medical Center in Worcester. 
Youth activists from around Massachusetts learned how the history of tobacco mirrors and is influenced by the history of race in the U.S.
They shared stories and discussed activities to address tobacco-related inequities in their communities.
