The Raiders got off to a fast start against Cambridge Rindge & Latin, but the offense struggled after losing the team’s starting running back, and a last minute comeback attempt failed. Watertown High School fell 21-19 in the team’s home opener Friday night at Victory Field. Watertown’s senior quarterback Nick McDermott ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third, but Raiders running back Mange Camara missed much of the game with an apparent ankle injury. Last week, against Arlington Catholic, the senior scored three touchdowns. After stopping the Falcons on their first possession, Watertown (1-1) drove 96 yard and went up 7-0 when McDermott scored on a sneak.

Watertown Cooperative Nursery School Seeking New Home in Town

For nearly two decades, a nursery school with a different approach from most has operated in the basement of a church in Watertown, but now the school is in search of a new home. 

Watertown Cooperative Nursery School began in 1952, and has been in the basement of the Grace Chapel Church on Main Street since 2001. One thing that separates the WCNS from other nursery schools is the involvement of family, said Kim O’Mahony, co-director and teacher at the nursery school. “Parent participate daily in school,” Cohen said. “They take turns being in the classroom, running the board, helping with maintenance.” A parent typically volunteers for the day once every three weeks, which also allows working parents to participate.

Middlesex DA, Watertown Police Investigating Death of Infant in Watertown

Watertown first responders went to a call Thursday afternoon for an unresponsive infant, who was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead. The cause of death is being investigated by the Chief Medical Examiner’s office. All child deaths are investigated, according to the DA’s office. Local news channels reported police activity near the Strawberry Childcare Center in the former Parker School. Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Watertown Police Chief Michael Lawn sent out the following announcement:
Today at 2:16 p.m. Watertown Police responded to a 911 call regarding an unresponsive infant on Watertown Street in Watertown.

Council Asks Board of Health to Create Rules, Oversight of Biotech Companies

Following a wave of input from concerned residents, Watertown officials will look at ways to make sure that biotech labs in town are safe. 

The issue arose in August when the developers of Arsenal Yards proposed changing office space in the renovated Arsenal Mall into space for biotech research and development. The issue is not likely an isolated one, with biotech being one of the fastest growing industries in the United States and in Massachusetts, and other communities in the area are taking steps to attract this sort of company. Residents noted that other towns have regulations for laboratories and some have committees to oversee biotech companies and advise the Board of Health. At Tuesday’s Town Council meeting, Council President Mark Siders said steps will be taken in Watertown to increase oversight of biotech facilities. “Watertown falls a little short when regulating these types of laboratories,”  Sideris said. A memo from Assistant Town Manager Steve Magoon to the Town Council said that the Watertown Board of Health will develop a framework for overseeing biotech companies.

Watertown Rotary Hosting Senior Citizen Cookout on Sunday

Watertown seniors are invited to the Rotary Club of Watertown’s Senior Citzen Cookout on Sunday, Sept. 16. This is a free event, with food, entertainment and more. 

The event will be from noon to 3 p.m. at the Sons of Italy Hall at 520 Pleasant St. in Watertown. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.

Entertainment will be provided by DJ Rock’n Richard Picceri and Maria’s School of Dance.
