WHS Sports: Boys Soccer Team Moves on in Tourney, Swimming Relays Qualify for States

Watertown will host some Monday night futbol when the boys soccer team hosts a North Section quarterfinal on at Victory Field. 

The fifth-seeded Raiders rolled in the first round game against No. 12 Whittier Tech, winning 4-0. Because 13th-seeded Bedford beat the fourth-seeded Newburyport, Watertown gets to host the tournament game. The game begins at 7 p.m. on Nov. 6 with the winner moving on to the North Semifinal on Wednesday at Woburn High School against the winner of the Wayland-Weston game.

Last Minute Drive Clinches Win for Watertown Football in Section Semi

The Watertown High School football teams playoff run appeared to be on life support at Somerville’s Dilboy Stadium Friday night when the home team scored with just over 2 minutes left in the North Section Semifinal, but a missed extra point left the door open for the Raiders to make a magical come back. With 2:15 left in the fourth quarter, Somerville senior quarterback Elijah Jeffreys ran for a five yard touchdown. The missed extra point left the score at 20-14 in favor of the Highlanders. Watertown junior quarterback Nick McDermott got the ball on his own 20 yard line with 2:15 left in the fourth quarter and calmly lead a 12 play drive for the winning score. He distributed the ball to a variety of Raiders receivers, who were able to get out of bounds to kill the clock.

Town Council Candidates Tackle Issues at Concerned Homeowners Forum

Many subjects came up during the Concerned Watertown Homeowners Association Meet the Candidates night, but one that was touched more than once was the affordability of living in Watertown. Property taxes and rents are growing even as the town undergoes a massive amount of development. One man said both his children have master’s degrees and good jobs, but cannot afford to buy in Watertown. The candidates for Town Council at the forum (Michelle Cokonougher was unable to attend) agreed that it is more and more difficult to buy a home in town, rent or even to stay in a property in town and shared their ideas for how to tackle the problem. The candidates for Town Councilor At-Large were asked about their ideas for controlling taxes, reducing taxes and/or making it easier for people to afford to be in town.

School Committee Hopefuls Share Their Views in the Candidate Q&As

The Watertown Public Schools are in a time of transition, with new leadership, plans to rebuild or renovate the schools and efforts to take the district to the next level. The School Committee oversees the budget and hires and evaluates the superintendent, as well as advising on other issues. On Nov. 7, voters will elect three members of the seven-member board. Watertown News reached out to the six candidates and asked questions about some of the biggest issues facing the Watertown Public Schools – improving education in the Watertown Schools, communication with parents and residents and attracting and retaining quality teachers.

Watertown Shuts Out Swampscott in Field Hockey Section Quarterfinal

Watertown High School kicked off the quest for a ninth straight MIAA field hockey championship by shutting out Swampscott, 3-0, Friday afternoon at Victory Field. It took more a quarter hour of the North Section quarterfinal for the Raiders (18-1) to solve a pesky Big Blue (11-6-3) defense. Watertown sophomore Brianna Williams scored 15:28 into the game off a feed inside the circle from senior co-captain Sydney Poulin. Four minutes into the second half, junior Olivia Lampasona blasted a ball into the Swampscott net from the right side of the circle. Senior Lauren Petrillo finished Watertown’s scoring when her shot struck a stick and looped over the head of the Swampscott goalie with under 4 minutes left in the game.

Watertown’s Peter Centola Named to Intercity Baseball League Hall of Fame

These days Peter Centola can be seen around Watertown’s recreation facilities as the town’s Director of Recreation, but in his younger days baseball was his life. His prowess on the diamond has earned him a spot in the Intercity Baseball League Hall of Fame. Centola played for 10 years in the very competitive adult baseball league for the Arlington-based Grannan Club, which turned into Holovack and Coughlin. He played first base and pitched. Being named to the the Hall of Fame was a thrill and an honor, Centola said.
