Watertown High School Students “Kick Butts” at State House

A group of students from Watertown High School students went to Boston last week to join a march to express their concern about the marketing and availability of tobacco products. On March 16, 2016 five Watertown Youth Coalition Peer Leaders joined the 84 Movement in a Kick Butts Day march to the State House in Boston, to speak with their legislators and “spread awareness about the Big Tobacco and their sneaky tactics of targeting youth,” said WHS student Shanesha Christmas. The Peer Leaders spoke with, State Sen. William Brownsberger, State Rep. Jon Hecht, and State Rep. John Lawn’s aide about their concerns of tobacco products being Cheap, Sweet and Easy to get, Christmas said. The Peer Leaders were excited that they had a chance to have their voices heard about their concerns in their community. Find out more about the 84 Movement on its website, http://the84.org/

Latest Plans for Filippello Park Has More Space for a Dog Park

The latest conceptual drawing of the renovated entrance to Filippello Park with an extended dog park area. The area for a dog park is much larger in the latest version of the plans to renovate the entrance to Filippello Park, and the plan would keep the athletic courts in the area near the driveway. 

Recreation Department Director Peter Centola and the town’s consultant, Glenn Howard of CDM Smith, presented the latest version of the park plan last week during a meeting at Town Hall. The new plan shows a long stretch of land on the south side of the driveway dedicated to dogs. Part of the area would be for large dogs, another section for small dogs, and a “time out” area. Centola said the changes were made after residents commented on the previous version.

Watertown Girls Basketball Team Rises to New Heights, Despite Loss

SPRINGFIELD – This year’s Watertown girls basketball team rose to heights never reached by the program and will leave a legacy, but it did not feel that way for the players after falling to Longmeadow in the MIAA Div. 2 State Final on Saturday. 

The 2015-16 Raiders squad went farther than any girls basketball team before them, and had an eight point second half lead before falling 36-31. When asked what her memories will be of this season, senior co-captain Michaela Antonellis said: “It’s going to be good. It sucks right now.” With the tears still fresh after the loss, senior co-captain Katelyn Rourke added that she and her teammates have left their mark.

UPDATED: Police Chief Asks Residents to Take Cars Off Road for Sunday’s Snow Storm

A late winter snow storm will be blowing through the area Sunday night and Monday morning, and Watertown Police Chief Michael Lawn requested that residents take cars off the road to allow plows to do their work. 

The Police Department has already ended the winter parking ban, but Lawn told residents to aid plows and emergency vehicles by removing their cars to municipal lots and other off-street parking areas. “With a pending snowstorm due tonight, Sunday March 20th into Monday we are asking residents to remove their vehicles from the roadways so the streets can be plowed,” the announcement said. “If a snow emergency is declared vehicles will be towed from the roadways.” Snow should start falling around midnight in Watertown, and the area could get 2-4 inches of snow and the worst of it could hit during the morning commute, according to the WCVB Channel 5 weather report. The town appears to be on the line between 2-4 inches and 4-8 inches according to WBZ Channel 4.

Watertown’s State Championship Dream Slips Away in the Fourth

SPRINGFIELD – Watertown had Longmeadow right where they wanted them in the MIAA Div. 2 girls basketball state final, with an eight point lead midway through the third, but the title slipped from their grasp and Longmeadow won 36-31. Watertown came out of the half and put up the first five points, punctuated with a lay up by junior center Shannon Murphy with 4:22 left in the third. A three pointer by Antonellis extended the Watertown lead to 29-21. The Lancers ate away at the lead and back to back shots by 6-foot-3 center Kayla Mokwuah gave Longmeadow the 31-29 lead with 5:24 left in the fourth.
