Rec Dept. Hosts Community Sports and Games Sunday, Youth Ski Trip

Finish out the winter vacation with the Recreation Department’s Community Sports and Games Program, plus get ready for the ski trip to Mount Wachusett. 

The Community Sports and Games Program begins Sunday, Jan. 3 at Watertown High School between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

There are times for different age groups:

Elementary Families, Pre-K to 5th grade: 2 to 3:15 p.m.
Middle School: 3:15 to 4:30 p.m.
High School: 4:30 to 5:45 p.m.
Adults: 5:45 to 7 p.m.

Wachusett Ski Trip
Snow is finally here, and the Wachusett Mountain Ski/Board Program is just around the corner. The trip is for grades 6-12, and will be held Jan. 9 from 4-11 p.m.

“If your child is interested and you have not signed up, please do so this week so we can plan accordingly,” the Recreation Department announcement said. Please remember to register for the bus with the recreation department and Wachusett for the skiing.

Big issues seemed to be everywhere you looked around Watertown in 2015, with new developments, the firefighter contract, the opioid epidemic and the Town Election, plus Watertown athletes enjoyed great success. Development
Rising above all the major issues this year was development. A number of major projects were proposed in town, many of which were approved. In January, the controversial East Watertown CVS got approved. In June, the major apartment complex on Arsenal Street, Elan Watertown, received approval – a project that went through the town’s new Design Standards and Guidelines.

WHS Sports: Boys Hockey Wins High Scoring Game, Herald All-Stars

The Watertown boys hockey team won a high scoring affair at the John A. Ryan Arena on Wednesday night. 

The Raiders took the non-league game 6-5 over visiting Westborough. The win improved Watertown’s record to 2-3 on the season. The Raiders’ next game is Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against Burlington at Ryan Arena. Herald All-Stars

Watertown Girls Basketball Team Faces Challenge in Holiday Tournament

The Watertown girls basketball team won’t be able to complete another undefeated regular season after falling in the final of the Hutchinson Tournament. The Raiders lost their first game of the year 40-36 to Coyle & Cassidy (5-0) in the final of the holiday tournament in Bellingham. Watertown recovered from a slow start to pull even at the end of the first quarter, but the Raiders could never take the lead, according to the report on Wicked Local Watertown. Junior Shannon Murphy led the Raiders with 17 points. Watertown plays in the Div.

In March, the Watertown High School boys hockey team made a historic run to capture its first state championship with a 2-1 win over Agawam at the TD Garden. The Watertown firefighter contract was a contentious issue that lasted most of the year, until it was settled in September. Steve Corbett Says Goodbye to Town Council After 10 Years

A mainstay on the Watertown Town Council, Steve Corbett, had his final meeting in December after a decade in town government. His focuses have been economic development, the disabled and he served on the building committee for the new Police Station, but Corbett said he did not come in with any particular ax to grind. “I never really tried to look for attention. I was one of nine. You really can do nothing by yourself.
