OBIT: Joseph Tardif, 80, Marine, Former Youth Hockey Coach

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday morning at 10:30 am in the Church of St. Jude, Waltham for Joseph A. Tardif. Mr. Tardif, a son of the late Philomon P. and Bibiane C. (LeClair) Tardif, died in the Mount Auburn Hospital on Sunday May 31, 2015 after a brief illness. He was 80. Joseph proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp.

Despite Popularity of Watertown Library, Some Offerings Remain a Secret

The popularity of the Watertown Free Public Library keeps growing, but Library Director Leone Cole said some programs remain largely unknown. The library has become a community hub, but Cole said the library has done surveys of patrons and found that people are not aware about all of its offerings. “We need to get more world out about what is happening in our library,” Cole said. “We do some social media promotion.” The library website also features a calendar of events (click here to see it).

Watertown’s Newest Food Truck Fuses the Foods of the Far East and Middle East

The Arsenal Project welcomes a new food truck to it’s Wednesday lineup. This one features a fusion of Turkish and Chinese cuisines! Uyghur Kitchen features food from China’s Northwest province known as Xinjiang. The Uyghur (pronounced wee-geer) are Turkic people who live in Central Asia, and their food includes influences from neighboring areas of Turkey, Tibet and China. The food truck is run by Pie Polat, who plays in a jazz-rock band called Background Orcs by night and runs the food truck by day.

WHS Sports: Girls Lacrosse Gets First Tourney Win, Baseball Makes States

The Raiders girls lacrosse team made history Monday evening by getting its first ever MIAA tournament win. Watertown doubled up visiting Bishop Stang 12-6 in the first round game at Victory Field. The Raiders were lead by the scoring of Aurora Fidler who had five goals. Jenna McMahon got a hat trick with three goals in the game. Watertown moves on and now will visit Dover-Sherborn on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in the East Section Div.

Public Works Director Discusses Winter, Goals for Next Year

The Department of Public Works had a busy Fiscal 2015 dealing with record snow fall, and officials are preparing for more snow, and the many other areas the DPW deals with. 

Public Works Superintendent Gerald Mee discussed some of the goals and areas the DPW will work on during his budget hearing on Saturday. The Fiscal 2016 DPW budget – not including waste disposal or snow/ice removal – is $5 million, up $151,000 from the prior fiscal year (which ends on June 30, 2015). The waste disposal budget is $2.96 million and $1.16 million has been allotted for snow and ice removal, said Town Manager Michael Driscoll. Winter of 2015
The DPW dealt with a record 112 inches of  snow, compared to an average of 42 inches, Mee said. They had 35 events that required plowing and/or sanding and salting, including eight major plowing events, Mee said.

WHS Sports: Lacrosse Teams Make Tournament, Track Record Broken

Two Watertown lacrosse teams will be hosting state tournament teams this week. 

The Raiders girls’ lacrosse squad earned the seventh seed in the East Section Div. 2 tournament with their record of 13-3-1. Watertown will host 10th seed Bishop Stang in a first round game on Monday, June 1 at 5 p.m. at Victory Field. The winner plays second seeded Dover-Sherborn. The boys’ lacrosse team (12-3) got the fourth seed and got a first round bye.

Auction Raises More Than $50,000 for Watertown Boys & Girls Club

The Watertown Boys and Girls Club held its Annual Spring Auction on Thursday, May 7 at the Oakley Country Club. Over 150 Club supporters were in attendance for the fundraiser featuring a live and silent auction. The event raised over $50,000 for our organization including $13,000 in camp scholarships. These funds are used to help defray the cost of attending our Summer Adventure Program at Camp Hale in Westwood, for kids whose families might otherwise not be able to afford it. “We wish to thank all our sponsors and guests for their support!

Mass Audubon Coming to Watertown to Present Program for Kids

The Mass Audubon Society will be in town to put on a specials interactive program for children ages 3-6. The Arsenal Project will host “Bugs and Flowers” on Wednesday, June 3. Drop in between 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to find out about wildlife around you. “Right outside your door the world is popping and hopping. Plants are flowers, bees are buzzing, and other insects are everywhere.
