Man Hole Cover Blown Off on Galen Street, Power Out in Area

A man hole cover was blown off by a fire on Galen Street near Morse Street on Saturday afternoon.A fire was reported in the manhole. The Watertown Fire Department was called and looked for possible extension of flames into the basements nearby homes but did not find any fire in the homes. A witness reported seeing flames coming out of the manhole, which is located near the Newtown House of Pizza. The incident also took out power on parts of Galen Street, including the lights at Galen Street and Nonantum Road and Galen Street and Morse Street. NStar and National Grid have been called, but could take an hour or more according to scanner reports.

Police Log: Driver Breaks Breaks Sign, Gets Car Stuck on Post and More

Jan. 14, 4:51 p.m.: An officer on Arsenal Street near Spruce Street saw a vehicle run a red light. The officer stopped the car and found the driver had only a Brazilian driver’s license and he had an active warrant. The 28-year-old Waltham man was arrested for unlicensed driving and a warrant from West Roxbury District Court for unlicensed driving.

CVS Project Coming Back to Zoning Board This Week

The proposed CVS in East Watertown will come back in front of the Zoning Board of Appeals for the second time on Wednesday, Jan. 28. The last time it came before the ZBA, the meeting ran about five hours and many residents spoke against having the 13,300 square foot pharmacy at the corner of Mt. Auburn and Arlington streets. Many say it is too big for the Coolidge Square area.

Car Stolen in Watertown Used in Jewelry Store Robbery

A car stolen from the streets of Watertown ended up being used in a robbery of a Newton jewelry store. A car was left running on the Union Street on Jan. 12 at about 12:40 p.m., said Watertown Police Lt. Michael Lawn. “The motor vehicle was moved from the driveway to in front of the home to make way for a delivery truck,” Lawn said. “The vehicle was left running and when the owner went back 10 minutes later it was gone.”

Youth Risk Study Results to be Revealed at Watertown Youth Coalition Meeting

The Watertown Youth Coalition will reveal the results of the 2014 Youth Risk Behavior Survey and members will talk about their work this year at the group’s General Meeting. The meeting will be held on Monday Feb. 9 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Community Hall at The Apartments at Coolidge School,319 Arlington St. in Watertown. UPDATED: Find Out How Much Snow to Expect in Watertown This Weekend

A storm with a mix of snow and rain will hit town early Saturday morning and the National Weather Service has upgraded the amount of snow forecast to fall on Watertown. Snow will begin falling at 3 a.m. on Saturday morning and the storm is forecast to drop 3-7 inches of snow and sleet on Watertown, according to the NWS website. Precipitation will be mostly snow before 10 a.m., then freezing rain between 10 a.m. and noon a mix of snow and rain after noon. The forecast for Sunday is sunny with a high around 34, but there is a chance of snow Sunday night and Saturday.
