Watertown Man to be Honored as One of the 25 Most Influential Millennials of Color

Get Konnected! will unveil its list of the 25 Most Influential Millennials of Color in Greater Boston, plus three founder’s choices, during the GK25: Who is Who event on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at WeWork Cambridge (625 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge) from 6:00-8:30 p.m. Among the honorees will include Rick Fredkin, president and founder of Watertown-based education and technology company Eduporium. Eduporium, whose mission is “empowering the future with technology,” brings the Watertown community together by offering STEM/STEAM technology to individuals of all ages from Kindergarten to higher education. Fredkin has over 20 years of experience in the technology field and is actively involved in the community with advisory panels that promote education, workforce readiness and diversity in the technology sector.

OP-ED: State Sen. Brownsberger Reflects on MBTA’s Long Term Planning

Comments are due on the MBTA’s long term plan on Monday, October 22 (extended from September 21). It is a provocative document that is well worth a read.  The document is available for comment at MBTAFocus40.com. As a regional agency dependent on state funding for more than half of its budget, the MBTA is constantly subject to political pressure from people like me to improve service. The demands of multiple elected officials serving different constituencies raise difficult choices for the agency about where to focus. In the “Focus 40” document, the agency is attempting to get above the politics and shape its priorities based on big picture data about needs.

Watertown Families Together Hosts Back to School Bonanza at Mall

Discuss Potential Renovation, Lights at Filippello Park at Upcoming Meeting

The Recreation Department sent out the following announcement:
The Town of Watertown will be hosting a Community Meeting on Monday, Sept. 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the Town Council Chambers. This meeting will be held to discuss the potential renovation plan to replace the current lighting system at Filippello (Grove) and install a new lighting system at Filippello (Arlington) with LED field lighting equipment and technology. There will also be a quick update in regards to the current renovation in progress at the Filippello Park (Grove) entryway. This renovation is moving along nicely and the completion is mid-November.

Watertown Man Attended Kickoff Breakfast for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

The American Cancer Society sent out the following information:
Edward Scheinbart of Watertown united with the American Cancer Society at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Boston Kickoff Breakfast on Aug. 9 at The Westin Boston Waterfront hotel. Scheinbart took a fun photo with one of the kickoff’s co-hosts Kris Anderson of 7News WHDH Boston. This year’s 26th annual Making Strides fundraiser walk, one of the oldest in the nation, will be Sunday, Sept. 30, with an 8-10 a.m. rolling start at the DCR Hatch Shell in Boston.

Watertown Group Hosting Showing, Discussion of Movie About the Opioid Epidemic

The W.A.T.E.R.T.O.W.N Task Force for Substance Use Disorder will host a screening of the  Oscar Nominated Documentary Heroin(e).

The W.A.T.E.R.T.O.W.N Task Force for Substance Use Disorder, along with Police and Fire departments, are taking a proactive role in education, prevention, and treatment of people and their families affected by substance use. Members will be on hand to describe initiatives. Heroin(e), a Netflix original film, depicts a rarely seen side of the national opioid epidemic: Hope. The 39-minute documentary follows three dedicated women — a fire chief, a judge, and a street minister — as they work to support residents of a Virginia town who are struggling with substance use.
