This week’s Family Movie Night, hosted by the Watertown Police & Recreation Departments, features Peter Rabbit. The Town sent out the following announcement:

The festivities will be held outside in the park at 552 Main St, behind the police station

6:30 p.m.- 8:00 p.m.: Games, Face Painting, Balloons, Popcorn, Pizza, Snow Cone Bus & Refreshments

Watertown Campers Complete Sheriff’s Youth Public Safety Academy

Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian recognized 189 Youth Public Safety Academy (YPSA) cadets from Watertown, Acton, Malden, Maynard and Newton during a graduation ceremony Friday, Aug. 3 at Chelmsford High School. Thirty-five of the graduating cadets were from Watertown. During the course of the week, the cadets participated in team building exercises, learned fire and personal safety skills and enjoyed educational games.  They also spent time with members of the MSO staff and their local police and fire departments. “Year after year, YPSA is one of the most well-received community outreach programs we run,” said Sheriff Koutoujian.  “It’s a great opportunity to build relationships between youngsters, the MSO and our public safety colleagues in fun-filled, educational settings.”

“YPSA is a great program, and a fantastic way to connect our youth and public safety professionals in a safe and positive atmosphere,” said Police Chief Michael Lawn.

LETTER: Resident Supporting Diehl in Massachusetts Senate Race

Last March the Watertown Republican Town Committee endorsed Geoff Diehl for United States Senate. So I was thrilled to read that our Republican State Committeeman Steve Aylward, is personally endorsing Geoff Diehl. Steve is a longtime respected Watertown resident, who has served community for decades in many capacities. His opinion on these matters should weigh heavy on us as we select our nominee to run against Elizabeth Warren. Geoff has done more for Massachusetts than Senator Warren has done in her time in the Senate.

Mary Labadini, devoted mother and loving sister, passed away Aug. 3, 2018, after a short battle with cancer at the age of 61. A native of Watertown, Mary was a diligent student her entire life, and hailed as an alumna from Watertown High School (Class of ‘75), Regis College (undergrad and Masters) and University of St. Joseph’s (Masters). Mary devoted the first part of her career to those also seeking higher education, and from 1991-2000, she worked at Mt.

When the going gets tough, you see what people are made of. I liked a lot of what I saw this year in the legislature and I got closer to my colleagues as we shared difficult choices. I will never forget the day-long meeting we had in December to grapple with the first news of the tragic scandal involving former Senate President Rosenberg and his husband. Every senator was vocal, emotional and forthright.  We had different instincts on how to handle the situation.  Some put their foot down for immediate action. Others favored investigation before drawing conclusions.

Recreation Department Announces Parking Information for Users of Filippello Park

Watertown Recreation Director Peter Centola provided the following information:

As a follow-up to the Filippello Park (Grove) renovation update, which was distributed on July 27, I would like to provide more specific instructions for parking beginning Monday, Aug. 6. The entryway to Filippello Park (Grove) will be closed beginning Aug. 6 due to the renovation of this area. Renovation will continue until approximately mid-November.

Group Hosting Meeting for People With Family Members with Mental Illness

Family Mental Health support group:  NAMI Family Mental Health Support Group is a free, structured, confidential peer-led support group for the families of individuals living with mental illness.  
A support group will be held on Tuesday, August 14, 7 to 9 p.m. at the Newton Wellesley Hospital, at 2014 Washington Street in Newton 02461, on the second floor of the main building in the Bowles Conference Center. This is organized by the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI).

Recommit to the Iran Nuclear Agreement
The Iran Nuclear Agreement of 2015 is a major step in stemming the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Reached after years of difficult negotiation, the agreement stands as an example what diplomacy can achieve. The United States’ decision to withdraw from the agreement is in sharp contrast to this diplomatic achievement. For the sake of the world and in memory of the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki the U.S. must recommit to this historic agreement.
