Celebrate Little Golden Books’ 75th Birthday

Celebrate Little Golden Books’ 75th Birthday with the Watertown Family Network at the Watertown Mall on Wednesday, October 18 at 10 a.m.! Join the Watertown Family Network and the Watertown Mall to celebrate Little Golden Book’s 75th birthday and hear the stories that we all grew up with as children. There will be songs, stories and surprises for kids of all ages. We will be raffling off Little Golden Books to add to your collection!

OBIT: Ellice Lund, 93, Active in Watertown Organizations, Worked at Cambridge Savings

Ellice T. (Lecie) Lund passed away peacefully on September 3 at the age of 93 in Littleton, MA. She was the beloved wife of the late John S. Lund and devoted mother of daughters, Jo-Anne Lund and husband, David Fox, and Susan Lund and her partner, Amy Bell, and the late Laurie Lund. She was the cherished grandmother of Emily Fox and her husband, Joshua Wigler, and Hudson Bell. Additionally, she is survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends. An active resident of Watertown for most of her life, Ellice worked at the Cambridge Savings Bank in Harvard Square.

Watertown Community Foundation Seeks Applications for Health, School Grants

The Watertown Community Foundation (WCF) is pleased to announce that we are
accepting applications for two programs: the Healthy Watertown Grants program and the School Program Grants (offered in conjunction with the Watertown Education Foundation). Healthy Watertown Grants

WCF has $10,000 in available grant money for the Healthy Watertown program. We are looking to support new or existing health focused programs that serve Watertown residents. Examples of programs eligible for Healthy Watertown Grants include:
• Food pantry programs or equipment needs
• Programs/services fostering healthy aging
• Support programs for care-givers
• Nutrition and/or meals programs for seniors
• Programs combating obesity
• Programs designed to help substance abusers become or remain “clean”
• Health-related programs for infants and their families
• Supplies/tools for community gardens
Health programs that serve students in Watertown’s public schools should apply to the School-based grant program. Healthy Watertown Grant proposals are due: November 1, 2017.

State Rep. Hecht Holding 2 Office Hours to Meet with Residents

Representative Jonathan Hecht announced he will hold office hours twice in Watertown this month. Constituents are invited to meet with Representative Hecht at the following times and locations. Monday, October 16, 5-6 p.m., Watertown Free Public Library, 123 Main St, Raya Stern Trustees Room

Thursday, October 26, 8:30-9:30 a.m., Watertown Town Hall, 149 Main St, 3rd Floor hallway

OBIT: Yolanda F. Pirolli, 95, Helped Run Building Materials Co., Raised 3 Sons

A Funeral Mass for Yolanda F. (Corsi) Pirolli, will be celebrated on Wednesday October 11, 2017 at 9 a.m., in the Church of Saint Patrick, Watertown. A daughter of the late Francesco and Antoinette (DiPaolo) Corsi. Yolanda passed away at the Lasell House in Newton on Friday evening, October 6, 2017 after a period of declining health. She was 95. Yolanda came to the United States from Italy. She married her late husband Michael J. Piroli and brought up her three boys here in Watertown, She and Michael were hard workers together.

Tufts Health Plan HQ Receives Superior Energy Performance Designation

Tufts Health Plan’s Watertown office buildings have received the top designation for superior energy performance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the company announced. “We’re honored to earn the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance. It is a testament to our outstanding staff who work tirelessly to reduce our energy footprint,” said Ronald Reppucci, Vice President of Real Estate and Support Services at Tufts Health Plan. “Saving energy is just one of the ways we show our community we care, as we do what we can to support the environment.”

This is the 12th consecutive year the office at 705 Mount Auburn Street has received the distinction, and the second year in a row the office at 64 Grove Street has received this distinction. Mount Auburn received a score of 91, while Grove received a 93.

Raiders 2007 Basketball State Champs to Enter WHS Athletic Hall of Fame

Hall of Fame Coach Steve Harrington consistently had his teams knocking on the door of a State Championship in the early 2000’s. In 2000, 2005 and 2006 the Red Raiders lost in the North Sectional Finals. In ’03 they lost in the Garden in the EMass finals. The gyms at Watertown High and the rest of their Middlesex League opponents was the place to be on Tuesday and Friday nights. Both home and away games were packed with loyal Red Raider fans.
