July Notes from the Director

It’s Summer! And we hope you will stop in the Senior Center to enjoy the air conditioning and take part in one or more of our many programs and activities. Take a look in our lending library for a new beach read, stop by and play a few rounds of Cribbage, Whist, Bridge or Rummikub, test your skill at Chess, attend an exercise class, or drop in for the Thursday movie. If you enjoy singing consider joining the Mellowtones who meet Friday afternoons.

Newton-Wellesley Hosts Support Group for Families Dealing with Mental Illness

Mental Illness support group:  NAMI Family Support Group is a free, structured, confidential peer-led support group for family members, caregivers and loved ones of individuals living with mental illness, organizers announced.  

A support group will be held on Tuesday, July 11, 7:30–9 p.m. at Newton Wellesley Hospital’s main building at 2014 Washington Street in Newton, on the second floor of the Bowles Conference Center. This is organized by the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI).

OBIT: Mary T. (O’Reilly) Fahey, Devoted to Her Family, Aide for Tip O’Neill

A Funeral Mass for Mary T. (O’Reilly) Fahey, will be celebrated on Friday July 7, 2017 at 9 a.m., in the Church of Saint Patrick, Watertown. Mary passed away in her home on Friday evening after a brief illness. She was 70. Mary was the devoted mother of Theresa Fahey McGoldrick & her husband Timothy of Watertown, Julia Fahey Slattery & her husband Patrick of Brighton and James M. Fahey of Watertown. Loving grandmother of Emma & Matthew McGoldrick and Ronan & Malachy Slattery.

Watertown Youth Coalition Honors 13 with Community Spirit Awards

The Watertown Youth Coalition (WYC) celebrated their 9th Annual Community Spirit Awards event held on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, the group announced. Community members gathered at Arsenal Park to recognize and honor people for going above and beyond to support Watertown youth and families. Each year, the WYC asks the community to nominate people who:

Serve as a positive influence or mentor to a Coalition member or to others in the community
Have the courage to address challenging issues that affect youth and the community
Actively take steps to improve the Watertown community (in big and small ways)

The WYC was pleased to present awards to:
Rev. Mike Clark, Belmont-Watertown United Methodist Church, for his work supporting people in the addiction recovery community. Eileen Donahue, Physical Education Teacher, Lowell School, for her outstanding Leadership qualities working with youth of all ages and building collaborations between athletes and students. Kerry Evans, Boys and Girls club staff, for spearheading a successful teen night at the club.

Summer Reading is for all ages! This week, the Children’s Room kicked off our Summer Reading program with a fun and interactive performance by the Yo-Yo People! We have a ton of fantastic programs and performances for children this summer. Teens can challenge themselves this summer by tracking their reading, leveling up to win prizes along the way.
