Minuteman High School Hosting Girls in STEM Summer Program

Are you a seventh- or eighth-grade girl who likes science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and wants to learn more about them in a supportive, female-oriented environment? Do you enjoy doing projects that are both fun and educational? Are you interested in finding out about career paths in STEM? Then register now for the Girls in STEM Explore at Minuteman High School in Lexington during summer vacation from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. from August 1 to 5, 2016! This five-day event featuring hands-on learning experiences is sponsored by Minuteman’s Girls in STEM Club, which consists of outstanding young women certified in mentoring who are currently being mentored themselves by successful female STEM professionals, the school announced.

106-Year-Old Armenian Genocide Survivor Coming to Watertown

A 106-year-old woman who survived the Armenian Genocide will be a special guest at an event at the Armenian Library and Museum of America in Watertown. The Genocide Education Project will host a training workshop for high school teachers on how to teach about the Armenian Genocide on June 10 in Watertown. Asdghig “Starrie” Alemian, 106, of Weymouth, will be in attendance at the event, according to a report on the Public Radio of Armenia website. Also speaking at the event will be Sara Cohan of the University of Southern California Shoah Foundation, who will deliver a talk called, “Testimony: The educational power of Armenian Genocide survivor interviews.”

The event will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the ALMA, 65 Main St. in Waterotwn.

Still Time to Register for Cops & Rec Middle School Basketball Program

The Watertown Police and the Recreation Department have teamed up to put on the free Cops & Rec Middle School Basketball Program this summer. 

Watertown Police officers will be part of the program, including Police Chief Michael Lawn, who will officiate some games. The first week of this program will consist of clinics, drills and evaluations and then four consistent teams will be selected. There will be a separate league for girls and boys and a schedule of games will be played beginning the following week. The focus of the program is to provide a fun, positive atmosphere with officials and scorekeepers while the participants play their game. Registration is on a first come first serve basis Limit is 40 participants per league

The program is for girls and boys in grades: 6-8 on Tuesdays May 24-July 5, 2016 (7 week program)

Time: 5:45-6:45 p.m. for girls, 6:45-7:45 for Boys

Sign Up for Summer Swim Lessons Before It is Too Late!

Registration for Watertown Boys & Girls Club’s Summer Adventure and Summer Swim Camp is open. Spots are filling up fast! Summer Adventure is a camp program for members ages 7-12. The program offers youth a safe environment to build new skills, foster new friendships, learn self-reliance, and become more confident all while having fun and being active in the great outdoors! Summer Adventure is held at Camp Hale Reservation in Westwood. Summer Swim Camp is for boys and girls ages 6-12 and is held at the Watertown Boys & Girls Club.

Watertown Veterans Office Seeks Volunteers to Place Flags on Vets’ Graves

The annual Flag Marker Disbursement at Veteran Gravesites will be held on Wednesday, May 25, announced Watertown Veterans Agent Mark Comeiro. Watertown will hold its annual Flag Marker disbursement at Veterans Gravesites on Wednesday May 25 th , 2016 beginning at 5 p.m.

If anyone would like to volunteer to assist in this honorable event, please meet at Ridgelawn Cemetery, on Highland Avenue in Watertown.

Watertown Student Wins Award for Excelling on National Latin Exam

Watertown’s Christopher Hornbuckle, an 11th grade student at The Newman School in Boston, was just honored with the National Latin Exam’s Silver Maxima Cum Laude award. The award is based on his strong performance on the test. Sponsored by the American Classical League and National Junior Classic League, the National Latin Exam tests students in the areas of grammar, comprehension, mythology, history and geography, with the goal of encouraging them to pursue studying the Latin language and culture.
