Planet Fitness Close to Opening New Gym in Watertown

Planet Fitness, one of the largest and fastest-growing franchisors and operators of fitness centers in the U.S. and home of the Judgement Free Zone ®, will soon open in Watertown, Massachusetts. The club plans to open its doors in mid-October and will be located on the Watertown/Newton line at 191 Watertown Street next to Stop & Shop, Planet Fitness announced. Planet Fitness invites local residents to sign up online at www.planetfitness.com or at the club’s presale office located outside of the club location for only $1 down and then $10 a month with no annual commitment from now through October 12. Prospective members can also visit the presale office to speak with Planet Fitness staff and learn more about the plans for the new club and its vast array of amenities. The presale office is open from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m.-3 p.m on Saturdays and Sundays.

Townhouses on Masonic Temple Site Get Approval from Zoning Board

A five-townhouse development on the Watertown Masonic Temple site got the go ahead from the Zoning Board of Appeals on Wednesday. The project received unanimously approval from the ZBA, the final approval needed for the project to begin. The development, proposed by PNG LLC, will have two buildings, a three-unit one facing Church Street (across from the First Parish Church) and another two-unit building on the back of the property. ZBA member Jason Cohen said he liked the project, but he had one suggestion about the porches that run along the front of the building, undivided. “This is the kind of housing we are looking for in the town,” Cohen said.

New Marriott Hotel Officially Opens, Rooms Already Filling Up

Since the 1980s, Watertown officials have talked about having a hotel in East Watertown, and this week the Residence Inn by Marriott had a ribbon cutting to officially open the new 150 room hotel on Arsenal Street. The hotel went up on the former site of Charles River Saab, across from the Arsenal Mall. The owners, Boylston Properties, also own the mall and have plans to renovate that area too. Boylston Properties Principal Bill McQuillan thanked his colleagues, designers ADD Inc., builders Procon Inc., and Stonebridge – the operators of the hotel – for “turning and idea into a beautiful, much needed amenity for Watertown.” While the ribbon cutting was held Sept.
