Library Hosting Emmy Winning Film, Discussion on Indigenous Child Removal

Winner of a 2019 Emmy Award for Outstanding Research, Dawnland offers the untold story of Indigenous child removal in Maine, capturing moments of truth telling and healing among the Wabanki people. On Wednesday, January 29, The Watertown Free Public Library will offer a screening of this powerful documentary, beginning at 7 p.m. Following the screening, Watertown resident Dr. Mishy Lesser will facilitate a discussion. Dr. Lesser is Learning Director for the Upstander Project and conducted some of the original (award-winning) research for Dawnland locally, at the Watertown Free Public Library. As recently as the 1970s, one in four Native children nationwide were living in non-Native foster care, adoptive homes, or boarding schools. Many of these children experienced emotional and physical harm by adults who mistreated them and tried to erase their cultural identity.

Historical Society Leading Tours of 1772 Edmund Fowle House

Edmund Fowle House, home of the Historical Society of Watertown. Tour one of the oldest and most historically significant houses in Watertown. The Historical Society of Watertown will lead tours of the house where the United State’s first treaty with a foreign power was signed and where the Declaration of Independence was first read in Massachusetts. ICYMI: Watertown Featured on WCVB’s Chronicle

Watertown was featured as part of a recent episode of WCVB Channel 5’s Chronicle. The piece focused on what residents already know: Watertown is the place to be! They highlighted the town’s Armenian community and visited Massis Bakery, and visited the Cigar and Lounge in the East End. The Wednesday Walks are moving indoors for the winter months! Circle Walking is a Chinese martial art and meditation in motion that can help reduce stress and improve balance. It is easy to learn and focuses on movement changes while walking around the edge of a circle in various stances.
