See Who Won the Democratic Presidential Straw Poll at the Faire on the Square

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders was the choice of Faire-goers for the Democratic nomination for President in the Watertown Democratic Town Committee’s annual straw poll at Saturday’s Faire on the Square. Sanders won 42 percent of the nearly 200 votes cast, while former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton came in second with 34 percent. The poll was held at the Democratic Town Committee’s booth at Watertown’s annual Faire on the Square, Saturday, September 26, 2015. Participants were asked to choose between the likely candidates in the 2016 Democratic Presidential Primary. Coming in third place with 18% of the vote was Vice President Joe Biden, who has yet to declare his candidacy. Other candidates receiving votes were former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley with 2 percent, and former Virginia Senator Jim Webb and former Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee with 0.5 percent each.

Find Out the Winners in Thursday’s Watertown Preliminary Election

Challenger Lisa Feltner and incumbent Cecilia came out as the winners of Thursday’s Preliminary Election for District B Town Councilor. 

With 343 votes, Feltner came out on top, more than 100 votes ahead of Lenk’s 228 votes. As the top two in the preliminary, both secured spots on the Nov. 3 Town Election. Watertown Firefighter Kevin MacDonald came in 33 votes behind Lenk. His 195 votes put him third in Thursday’s election, and Patty van Dinter had 25 votes.

See Which Town Council Candidate Dropped Out of the Race

The crowded field of candidates for Watertown Council just got a bit smaller. District D challenger and retired Watertown Firefighter Bob McCarthy informed the Town Clerk’s office this week that he will be dropping out of the race. McCarthy could not be reached for comment, but in a letter to Town Clerk John Flynn received Sept. 16 McCarthy wrote, “I respectfully request that my name be withdrawn as a candidate for the office of ‘Councilor District D’ in the upcoming Town election scheduled for November 03, 2015.” With McCarthy leaving the race, District D Councilor Ken Woodland will be the only name on the ballot.

Voter Guide for Thursday’s Preliminary Election in Watertown

Voters in District B will head to the polls Thursday in the preliminary election for the district Town Councilor. Residents of District B, which includes Precincts 4, 5 and 6, have the choice of four candidates. The top two move on to the town election on Nov. 3. Incumbent Cecilia Lenk faces three challengers – Lisa Feltner, Kevin MacDonald and Patty van Dinter.

League of Women Voters Reminds Residents About Election This Week

The League of Women Voters of Watertown recognizes that everyone is still enjoying the end of summer and perhaps worrying about the start of the new academic year.  However, the town election season is also coming up.  In particular, the citizens who live in District B have a chance to make their choices in the Preliminary Election on September 17, 2015.  Please take note of the date because it is a Thursday rather than the usual Tuesday. We encourage all the voters in District B to exercise their privilege to vote in this election.

Council Candidates Talk Development, Union Contracts, Traffic & Parking

Residents heard from the District B Council candidates at a recent Candidates Forum, but there were some left over questions. Here are the answers from the four candidates. The Preliminary Election for District B is on Thursday, Sept. 17. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Only voters in precincts 4, 5 and 6 (who vote at the Philips School and Hibernian Hall) can participate.

Candidates for District B filed their campaign finance papers, and challenger Lisa Feltner lead the way with more than $2,000 raised. A candidate in another race, however, had the most donations. The campaign finance reports were due eight days before the preliminary election. Three of the candidates filed by the deadline – Tuesday, Sept. 8.
