3 Watertown Non-Profits Receive Grants from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation

The following information was provided by theHarvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation:

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation has announced that three Watertown non-profit organizations were awarded a total of $1,500 from the Foundation’s Community Spirit 9/11 Mini-Grant program. The organizations receiving funds are:
Asperger/Autism Network ($500)
Relay for Life Watertown ($500)
Saint Stephen’s Armenian Elementary School ($500)
To commemorate those Harvard Pilgrim members who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, Harvard Pilgrim and the Foundation created the Community Spirit 9/11 Mini-Grant program. This program allows each Harvard Pilgrim employee to award a $500 grant, completely funded by the Foundation, to the local charity of his or her choice each calendar year. Since this community grants program began in 2002, Harvard Pilgrim employees have directed more than $5.7 million to thousands of organizations throughout Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.

Tufts Health Plan Employees Traveled Across New England for 10th Annual Volunteer Day

Tufts Health Plan employees are traveling across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Rhode Island on June 19, 2018, during the company’s tenth annual Volunteer Day, to serve local nonprofits in projects ranging from food preparation to yard work. “Our employees are extraordinary, and they demonstrate their commitment to our community and our members each and every day,” said Tom Croswell, Tufts Health Plan president and CEO. “Seeing more than 750 employees giving back reflects our values and makes me proud. I am thankful for each and every employee who is out in the community today.” Now in its tenth year, Volunteer Day builds on the work Tufts Health Plan does throughout the year.

The Watertown Boys & Girls Club received a pair of grants to help improve the Clubhouse on Whites Avenue, Club representatives announced. True Value Grant Provides Paint

As students across Watertown get ready to go back to school, Watertown Boys & Girls Club is getting a fresh coat of paint thanks to a partnership with Waltham True Value. The Club is one of many across the nation selected to receive a “Painting a Brighter Future” grant. Every day, 11 million kids are left unsupervised after school. Boys & Girls Clubs are there to provide kids with quality after-school programming to keep them on track to academic success and a great future.

Watertown Group Raises Money to Help Families Impacted by Violence

A group from Watertown raised $1,600 during the 22nd annual Louis D. Brown Peace Institute Mother’s Day March for Peace. The organization which helps families who have lost loved ones to violence. The group is named after a teen from Boston who was committed to ending gang violence, but in 1993 he was killed by crossfire during a shootout. The march takes place in Dorchester each Mother’s Day. The group from Watertown included Town Councilors Tony Palomba and Caroline Bays.

Watertown Community Foundation held its annual spring grant awards evening at the Mosesian Center for the Arts on Thursday June 7. The following grants were
awarded in two categories:Program Grants awards grants designed to help organizations that serve Watertown, develop new or continue existing programs with an educational focus (broadly defined). These are programs that operate outside of the Watertown’s public schools. Charles River Conservancy — Conservancy Volunteers Program
The Charles River Conservancy supports the Conservancy Volunteer’s programs efforts in the Charles River Parklands in Watertown. The Plumbing Museum — Comedy Play Fest at the Plumbing Museum
The Plumbing Museum will present a program of short plays inspired by materials in the Plumbing Museum and bring theater to new audiences in an unexpected venue.

Watertown Community Foundation Merging with Watertown Education Foundation

The Watertown Community Foundation and the Watertown Educational Foundation joined forces and cemented their two-year school grant partnership with a merger of the organizations in February 2018. Together, they combine over forty years of fundraising and grant making to the Watertown Public Schools. This official unification provides the Watertown school community a consolidated source of support for innovative educational programs and activities. The merged organization will continue to be known as the Watertown Community Foundation and the President of the Watertown Educational Foundation, Elaina Griffith, joined the board of the Watertown Community Foundation. “For the past two years, the Community Foundation and the Educational Foundation have run a combined school grants program.

Marshall Home Fund Presents Grants to Programs Helping Older Adults

The following information was provided by the Marshall Home Fund:

Watertown’s Marshall Home Fund held its annual grant award ceremony on May 15, providing nearly $70,000 to 13 local organizations that serve older adults. Though its grant making, MHF helps Watertown be an age friendly community, one where older residents can be healthy and productive. The World Health Organization and the AARP have established specific goals for a community seeking to be age friendly. The 2018 grantees of the Marshall Home Fund will
provide programs and services that address many of these goals, as summarized below. Direct health, mental health, and social services for vulnerable individuals: Springwell’s Elder Independence and Safety Fund ($7,000); Watertown Council on Aging’s Emergency Assistance Block Grant ($750); Wayside Youth and Family Support Network’s Annual Health Fair at the Housing Authority ($1,500); and Watertown Health Department’s Compassionate Connections VIII Program addressing challenges associated with severe clutter ($2,500).
