Students & Seniors Can Sign Up for Snow Shoveling Program, Pizza Party for Last Year’s Participants

The Watertown Recreation Department announced that signups for the 2022-23 Watertown Snow Shoveling Program. Students can sign up to help an older resident, and Watertown seniors can sign up to have their property shoveled. The Rec Department will throw a pizza party for last year’s participants. The Recreation Department provided the following information:

Snow Shoveling Program

In coordination with the Watertown Middle School, Watertown High School, Recreation Department, Council on Aging/Senior Center, and the Marshall Home Fund, we are offering a snow-shoveling program specifically for our senior residents over age 60, and those who are disabled.  

Watertown Middle School and Watertown High School students are matched with senior residents in their neighborhood and assigned to be responsible for shoveling snow from the sidewalks, steps, and driveways for the duration of the winter season.

Winter Wonderland Dance Mini Sessions at Watertown Studio

The weather outside is frightful…so come join our Winter Wonderland Mini-Session! We will bring the blizzard into the studio and stay warm all at the same time! During this mini-session, kids will create holiday cheer through Jazz and Musical Theater dance styles, wintery songs and create their very own sparkly snowflakes! At the end of this 6 week session, dancers will receive a special holiday sparkle to wear during their final performance for families! A Look Back at the First 50 Years of the Watertown Boys & Girls Club

The Watertown Boys & Girls Club turned 50 years old in 2022, and during that time the club has faced its share of challenges to continue its mission of serving the youth of the community. On Oct. 28, the Club hosted a 50th Anniversary Gala to celebrate the people who made the first half century possible, and asked for support to continue serving Watertown. Watertown came together to build the clubhouse on land on Whites Avenue, near the then-Town Hall, now City Hall. The first step was to get approval to use the land, recalled Allen Gallagher, who served as Executive Director from 1991 to 2012.

OBIT: Sue Chen, Former Owner of Wonder Cafe in Watertown

Sue Chen and her family at Wonder Cafe, which operated on Mt. Auburn Street from 2009-15. Dear family, friends, and businesses of Watertown,

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Sue Chen on October 29, 2022.  Sue was the owner of Wonder Cafe on Mt. Auburn Street, Watertown from 2009 to 2015. 

One of her greatest joys was meeting and feeding people in the family restaurant she started. She carefully planned the renovation, decorations and furnishings to create a happy and welcoming environment for all ages. Guests would also complement the signature orange walls. By December 2009 Wonder Cafe was officially opened with her children by her side. 

Throughout the years, customers of Wonder Cafe would also become friends. Parents would come by with their doting children for a meal. Watertown High School students would bond over dumplings, noodles, and bubble tea. Friendly city employees would pick up lunches to go. Late night eaters ordering chicken wings and fried rice. Sue would manage the back of the kitchen, while her three children would take incoming calls, wait on guests, and make deliveries.

Unacceptable Risk: Dr. Margaret Kripke on Cancer and the Environment tells the story of a prominent cancer researcher who rethinks her assumptions about the causes of cancer and the influence of toxic chemicals in our everyday environment.
