Feb. 7, 4:30 p.m.: A woman was stopped after being seen concealing items in Target. When she was stopped she had 19 pieces of women’s clothing worth $264.87. Police arrested the 25-year-old Allston woman for shoplifting over $100.
In March, a year after Watertown Firefighter Joseph Toscano lost his life fighting a fire, a memorial in his name will be unveiled near the East End home where the tragedy occurred.
At Tuesday night’s Town Council meeting, East End Town Councilor Angeline Kounelis announced the date of the dedication. “Eleven months ago a tragedy occurred in our community,” Kounelis said. “There was a loss of life. Firefighter Joseph Toscano answered his final alarm on Merrifield Avenue.” On March 17, 2018 at 10 a.m., a plaque will be unveiled at the corner of Merrifield Avenue and Bigelow Avenue to memorialize Toscano.
Once again this year the Watertown Police Department will host a 5K run and walk to commemorate the anniversary of the events that led to the capture of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.
The Watertown Police Finish Strong 5k Run/Walk begins at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 29, 2018 starting and finishing at Tufts Health Plan 705 Mount Auburn Street in Watertown. Mission: The Watertown Police Relief Association, Watertown Supervisors Association and Watertown Patrol officers Association will commemorate the 5th anniversary of the events that led to the capture of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects by inviting the community to fill the streets of Watertown in a 5K celebratory road race and walk.Proceeds to benefit the WPRA, WPSA and the WPA. Proceeds from this event will benefit the WPSA, local charity & victim funds, One Fund, Watertown Police Foundation and the new foundation to support youth community programming and school safety initiatives
Course: The course is fast and fairly flat 3.1 miles (5k). Prizes to top male/female finishers plus various age categories. Runners and walkers welcome and for safety purposes, no skateboards, rollerblades/skates, bicycles, or animals can be taken on the course.

Feb. 1, 4:17 p.m.: A woman was stopped in Target after she was seen concealing items in her shopping carriage and then tried to leave the store without paying. She said she was planning to return the items but did not make an attempt to do so. The woman had 63 items of clothing, boots, cosmetics and an ice tea that, combined, were worth $1,187.60.
The Watertown Fire Department is excited to announce our receiving S.A.F.E. and Senior SAFE Grant funds from the state for the second year in a row. We have received $5,407 for S.A.F.E (Student Awareness of Fire Education) and $2,813 for Senior SAFE. Over the past year we were able to visit each third grade classroom in the district to educate the students on several topics including smoke and CO alarms, home escape planning, crawling low under smoke, and match and lighter safety. With the receipt of this year’s funds we hope to continue our efforts with the third grade and work on expanding to other grade levels. The funds will also help the fire department train more firefighters as Public Fire and Life Safety Educators through the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy.
Watertown Police seek the identity of a man who robbed a convenience store on Mt. Auburn Street on Feb. 3, 2018. At 10:02 p.m. on Feb. 3, a man wearing a mask used a knife to rob Victoria Spa at 597 Mt.
Two men face drug charges and a woman was arrested on unrelated charges after a drug investigation in Watertown. On the afternoon of Jan. 30, Police working with the Suburban Middlesex County Drug Task Force observed what they believed to be a drug deal in a vehicle at the corner of Pilgrim Road and Acton Street. They had received a tip of drug activity in the area, said Watertown Police Sgt. Thomas Grady.

Jan. 22, 6:03 p.m.: Police were called to the Watertown Free Public Library because of an unruly patron. The man was reportedly out of control and when officers arrived he jumped up and began yelling about how no body wanted to listen to him. Police asked the man to step aside so he was not disturbing others at the library but he got more aggressive in his yelling and made derogatory remarks about the police.
