Watertown Field Hockey Looks to Make History, Again, in 2016

After an historic 2015 season, the Watertown High School field hockey team will embark on its quest for another history making season on Wednesday.

In 2015, Watertown broke the national record for most games unbeaten and won yet another state championship, and this year the Raiders have their eyes on the team’s eighth straight title and the national record winning streak. Coach Eileen Donahue and the Raiders have won 100 straight, and seek to top the record of 106 straight wins by Oklahoma City’s Casady School. That makes the home game against Stoneham on Sept. 20 the streak tying game and the game at Wilmington on Sept. 22 the record setter.

See the Watertown Football Schedule – First Game Coming Up Soon

Coming off one of the most successful seasons in years, the Watertown High School football team is nearly ready to kick off the season – well the preseason, anyway. Last year the Raiders lost in the section final to league-rival Stoneham, but defeated Belmont on a last-minute field goal. The first scrimmage for the 2016 squad will be held Saturday, Aug. 27 at 10 a.m. at Victory Field. After a second scrimmage at Newburyport, Watertown plays its first official game on Saturday, Sept.

School District Creating Group to Look at Extended Day Program

After the furor over the recent announcement that the Extended Day program would not be available on some early release days, Watertown school officials will put together a group of parents to look at solutions for covering the program on those days. At last week’s School Committee meeting, Human Resources Director Craig Hardimon said he attended a meeting last Tuesday with other school administrators to hear from parents. “I need to be clear that we heard loud and clear that parents and guardians are upset with the decision to close the extended day program for the professional days, the timing of the announcement and the overall theme of communication,” Hardimon said. “Please accept our apology. If we could do it over again, we would have handled it differently.”

Discussion of Temporary Lights at Victory Field Coming to a Subcommittee This Week

A Town Council subcommittee will meet Tuesday to discuss using temporary lights to light fields in town, including the track and oval at Victory Field, for youth sports. The Human Services Committee will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Town Hall. The meeting comes around the same time that a committee will be appointed to discuss of renovation the track area of Victory Field. The subject is being restarted after a contentious first attempt where many residents opposed putting in artificial turf in the middle of the oval, and neighbors objected to adding lights to the field. Watertown youth sports programs have complained that they do not have enough time on fields.
