Watertown Girls Basketball Coach Running Camp This Summer

Watertown High School girls basketball coach Pat Ferdinand, who guided the Raiders to the state final this March, will hold a week-long basketball camp at the high school this summer for girls age 8-16. The ASA-WILDCATS Girls Camp ages 8-16 will be held at Watertown High School from August 1-5, 2016. ASA provided the following information about the camp:

ASA and Walter McCarty camps are geared for all ages and abilities. All campers are expected to work very hard, be receptive to coaching, exhibit discipline, a strong work ethic, and be serious about basketball. As a staff we pride ourselves in being teaching camp first, campers are expected to learn and exhibit certain skills throughout the week.

Boston Basketball Running Camps for Players With a Range of Skills

Young basketball players can build their skills this summer at one of the camps offered by Boston Basketball in Waltham. 

Boys and Girls Summer Camp

Spend your summer improving your game with great coaches! Cost: $225 full day/ $115 half day

Monday – Thursday: 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Program Highlights:

LOW RATES and a Drop-In Rate – $50.00 per Day

Players will gain confidence from:

Challenging ball handling drills
Learn how to create your own shot
Develop your shot (selection, footwork, range and ability)
Develop moves to help attack and finish around the rim

The goal of the clinic is to build better basketball players. Clinic includes:

Individual instruction
Development of the fundamental skills of shooting, offensive techniques, ball handling, proper defense, and passing
Intensive high rep skills training

Girls and Boys Clinic

Red Sox Hosting First Ever Greek Heritage Night on Friday

The Boston Red Sox will host their first ever Greek Heritage Night on Friday, May 13. Locals with Greek heritage are invited to attend the game, where leading members of New England’s Greek community will be honored in a pre-game ceremony. Part of the ticket sales will be donated to the Agganis Foundation, which supports young athletes with college scholarships. Play Ball! Watertown Little Leaguers Celebrate New Season at Casey Field

More than 400 boys and girls marched from Watertown Square to Casey Park for the Watertown Youth Baseball and Softball celebration Saturday morning. The season is a few weeks old, but that did not stop the youngsters from enjoying the festivities. New Watertown Police Chief Michael Lawn threw out the first pitch. He said he missed his time on the diamond, both as a player and a coach. “I played for the Cubs at Bemis (Park) and I live in just over the border Waverley, and was heavily involved in the league over there,” Lawn said.

Watertown Grad Named to Women’s Track Academic All-Conference Team

Watertown High School graduate Lea Strangio made the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Women’s Track and Field Academic All-Conference Team. 

The college sophomore at WPI made the list of honorees who have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2015 fall semester, achieved second year academic status at her institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season. Strangio has also had impressive results on the track. She was named the NEWMAC women’s track athlete of the week on April 4, after a strong performance at the Coast Guard Invite. She also won the 800-meter run and qualified for the New England DIII and ECAC DIII Championships. She also was part of the WPI 4×400 meter relay team which won that race at the meet. The New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) consists of 11 highly selective institutions committed to academic excellence: Babson College, Clark University, U.S Coast Guard Academy, Emerson College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Springfield College, Wellesley College, Wheaton College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Watertown Swimmers Make Waves at Boys & Girls Club Nationals

Members of the Watertown Boys & Girls Club’s swim team, the Wavemakers, competed in the National Boys & Girls Club Championships in St. Petersburg, Fla., and were part of the team that placed third overall, according to the Club. Earlier this month. Watertown Boys & Girls Club attended the 3-day competition as a member of Team New England, the team that came in third place in the national competition! Nineteen swimmers from the Wavemakers attended and many moved on to finals where several swimmers had their personal-best times.

Once again Watertown had a large contingent running the Boston Marathon in 2016, with 31 residents finishing the full 26.2 miles. The top finisher from Watertown was Christopher Hine, whose time of 2:51:35 placed him 592nd overall. Jason Dunklee also finished in the top 1,000, at 669th and he also finished 64th in the men’s 40-44 division. The top female runner from town was Laurie Nahigian, who ran the race in 3:17:15. She placed 547th among women in the race, and was 18th in the women’s 45-49 division.
