This week, Watertown said goodbye to a man who devoted his life to three things: family, business, and the community. Thousands lined up in the cold weather for his wake on Tuesday, and on Wednesday hundreds sat in the pews at St. Patrick’s Church for the funeral of John S. Airasian.

I just attended “Protecting Democracy in the Era of Donald Trump including a Discussion of Citizens United” with State Senator Brownsberger at the Watertown Library. Attendees from Watertown, Waltham, Belmont, and Brighton got to express their concerns about the current situation in Washington, D.C., and asked how to impact it. The most salient point was to participate in the electoral process.

Expect strong winds throughout the weekend, particularly Friday and Saturday, which could lead to tree and powerline damage, especially in higher terrain areas. The weather will be mostly dry and calm through early next week, with temperatures gradually warming up. While conditions will remain seasonably cool into the weekend, by midweek temperatures will rebound into the low 50s and possibly near 60°F by Wednesday. There will be no significant snow or ice in this period. The march towards spring begins!

Fighting climate change is essential, but how we do it matters.
Watertown is considering new rules that would shift the costs of decarbonization onto property owners, businesses, and renters. The proposed ordinance, known as BERDO, would have Watertown join Boston, Lexington, Cambridge, and Newton by requiring owners of properties 20,000 square feet or larger to track and reduce fossil fuel use — or face fines.

This is going to be a happy, celebratory kind of weekend in town. Watertown is a wonderful mix of cultures, religions, sports fans and cuisines, so let’s get out and have fun with it all. The play starts on Friday evening at the Mosesian Center. It’s called “When Gandhi and Mohammed Meet,” about an interfaith marriage. Saturday is hopping, with a hockey game at our skating rink in the evening, or you can chow down on some corned beef and cabbage as well as taste many versions of Irish soda bread (or join the competition yourself) that evening at St. Patrick’s Church. On Sunday afternoon there is more Irish fun at Donohue’s Bar and Grill with a band and some step dancing to check out. If green beer isn’t your cup of tea, head to the Sons of Italy for a special luncheon celebrating International Women’s Day. It’s a weekend full of celebration. And if our hockey team wins, there will be even more!
