A new ordinance approved by the City Council prohibits restaurants from automatically including plastic utensils with takeout orders, however customers can request these items when they order or pick up their food.

After receiving questions about and requests to protect immigrants in Watertown in recent weeks, City Council President Mark Sideris emphasized the steps being taken by the City to provide safety and security, but said he does not favor the City Council passing a resolution or executive order regarding immigrants in Watertown.
The second annual Watertown Eco Fest will feature activities including electric bike test rides, vendors of sustainable products, activities for kids, and more. The event, hosted by the City of Watertown, will also include representatives from City departments and community organizations focused on sustainability.

A building along the Charles River in Watertown where textiles were once made has a new tenant involved in manufacturing. Tutor Intelligence creates AI robots that are used by companies from coast to coast.
The Watertown High School Robotics Team will be hosting an open house in December.

Watertown senior quarterback Brennan Cook has thrown nine touchdown strikes in 2019.
Watertown High School’s football season started with promise, after a 2-0 start, but a five game losing streak meant no playoffs this year. However, the Raiders have a chance to finish the year on a winning note, and a with winning record, by beating their archrivals from Belmont on Thanksgiving.
Former Watertown High School Cross Country Coach Tom Wittenhagen will be honored with the MSTCA Lifetime Achievement Award this spring. He retired this year after 47 years coaching and teaching in town. He is shown here with James Piccirilli, left, and Emily Koufos after the 2016 All-State Cross Country Meet.
During his 47 years teaching and coaching in Watertown, Tom Wittenhagen impacted hundreds of students, and his commitment will be recognized by the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association.
Watertown Town Hall
Tuesday night, the Town Council will hear the annual Tax Classification hearing presentation from Town Assessor Earl Smith, which calls for increasing the break given to owner-occupied homes and condos in Watertown.
Watertown’s Commander’s Mansion will host a Christmas Celebration on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2019 from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

On Nov. 18, House and Senate conferees filed their report on the hands-free cell phone safety bill. The bill is virtually certain to be approved by both branches and to become law shortly.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is encouraging members of the public to plan ahead for the Thanksgiving holiday travel period by recognizing that traffic volumes and the number of travelers on public transportation will be higher than normal. Drivers and transit customers should use the appropriate resources to make informed decisions on route and timing of travel, and check public transportation service schedules.

As many of you may have heard, the Mount Auburn Cemetery’s property on Grove Street is up for sale. Just next door to Filippello Park, the site is currently being leased by the Mount Auburn Hospital for employee parking. Most bidders on the lot are looking to build lab/office or residential space there. This means more cars on Grove Street and no chance at expanding our open and green space in Watertown. There’s also a historic home on the site called the Shick House which isn’t likely to be saved under that scenario. The Shick family once operated a dairy farm from that house in the mid 1900’s.
