A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Sept. 4, 2015 in the Church of Saint Luke, Belmont at 10:30 a.m. for Eugene T. “Gen” Donovan.

Mr. Donovan, a son of Margaret C. (Hook) and the late Eugene W. Donovan,, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Aug. 31, 2015 at Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, after a 19 year battle with prostate cancer, he was 68.

Gene was a resident of Watertown for the past 39 years. He graduated from Arlington High School in 1965. He worked for Verizon as a Telephone technician for 32 years. At the age of 50, he went back to college and earned a Bachelor of Science in English from Northeastern University.

He loved reading, writing and spending time playing with his seven grandchildren.  He also enjoyed coaching Watertown Youth Hockey, spending time in his garden, trips to Boston, horse racing and anything Irish. His constant laughter, smiles and jokes brought joy to all who had the privilege of knowing him. He adored his many visits to Ireland, which he considered his second home, and spending time with his wife’s family.

He was the beloved husband of 42 years to Margaret M. (Carrig).  Loving father of Kerry Biddy, and her husband Kenneth  of Watertown, Watertown Fire Lt. Brian Donovan and wife Randi of Waltham, Patrick Donovan and his wife Jaclyn of Wayland and Watertown Firefighter Timothy Donovan of Watertown. Devoted son of Margaret C. Donovan and the late Eugene W. Donovan of North Falmouth. Loving grandfather of Bianca, age 22, Brody, 6; Kiera, 5; Avery, 5; William, 3; Alyssa, 2; and Charlotte, 1.

Dear brother of Elieen Donovan of Margate, FL , Barbara Glover and her husband Edward of Mendon, Teresa Donovan of Northport, N.Y., Michael Donovan and his wife, Julie of Hollidaysburg, Pa., and the late James “Jimmy” Donovan and Mary Donovan. Also survived by many brother in-laws and sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins in the U.S., Ireland, and England.

Funeral from the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home at 270 Main St., Watertown on Friday Sept. 4, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. followed by Funeral Mass in the Church of St. Luke’s 132 Lexington St., Belmont, at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Visiting hours are Thursday 4-8 p.m.

Interment at Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
