  1. It’s only an outdoor rink if you can skate on it. How many total days since opening in 2013 has the outdoor rink had a sheet of ice for public skating? Serious question here. This seems like another waste of money attributed to the Director of Recreation’s inability to ever be told no by responsible adults in town. I’ll wait here for the total, Peter.

    • Wow – Dan!

Unfortunately, you are mistaken – the design and construction was not primarily for ice use or we would have put chiller equipment under the cement pad.

I guess you missed the public meetings when the design / purpose / construction was discussed and approved.

We have periodically worked hard to create an ice sheet during the winter, but it takes a liner, instalation, water, some extended cold weather, and alot love and care. To me, certainly well worth the effort in most occasions, just didn’t work out this year.

The rink as built has been used on a regular basis since its construction for street hockey, inline hockey, lacrosse and futsal and certainly well worth the Town’s investment.

It seems like you have an ax to grind or multiple with me, so feel free to reach out to me at 617 972 6494 or 617 312 9007.

I am certainly not going to be disrespected / bullied by someone who has not done their homework and just hides behind their first name.

  2. The facilities at Casey Park, including the rink, are all top notch. Under the tremendous direction of Pete Centola, our Recreation Department helps kids with indoor and outdoor activities 12 months a year. Thank you Pete for all you do.

    • Bob,
I would have to disagree with you completely.

The facilities at Casey are decent to fair but not even close to being considered “top notch” in my opinion. The rink is OK but is a challenge to maintain. The basketball courts are like any other courts around, and the baseball field is generic with very old bleacher and player seating, not to mention it floods.

It’s nice for a town to have playing fields for all to enjoy but in this town we seem to put more priority over some of these fields than we have our own public schools. Look at us now, having to rebuild all but one school at the same time. That’s a result of very poor planning and not prioritizing.

  3. You left out the two very-good tennis courts at Casey. In spring/summer/fall these courts are routinely highly used. The lights provide greater use. I, too, applaud the efforts of our Recreation Dept. under the leadership of Peter Centola. Just wish the town would expedite the work on the Moxley tennis courts.

  4. Thank you all for chiming in and thanks for the support and comments.

We are always interested in your views, but it is certainly helpful if you reach out to recreation department to hear about our plans and what is in the pipeline.

It is also nice to know who is sharing the concern or asking a question.

As some know, we have a monthly “Open Forum” to find out the latest plans, and an opportunity to be heard, but certainly you can reach out to me anytime at pcentola@watertown-ma.gov or 617 972-6494 or 617-312-9007

  5. The recreation department is hosting our “Open Forum” on Tuesday, February 2 at 7:00 .

Feel free to attend to voice your thoughts and ask question through Zoom technology.
