Boston Ballet presents Marius Petipa’s The Sleeping Beauty

Hailed as one of the Company’s trademark works, this quintessential production features additional choreography by Frederick Ashton, a soaring score by Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky performed live by the Boston Ballet Orchestra, and sumptuous sets and costumes by Emmy Award-winning designer David Walker. The Sleeping Beauty runs May 28-June 7 at the Citizens Opera House.

“Few ballets embody the full breadth of classical technique like The Sleeping Beauty. Its demanding choreography and Tchaikovsky’s luminous score push our dancers to their highest level, requiring precision, stamina and grace,” said Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen. “This ballet is so special that, despite its complexity, it remains one of the most inviting ballets for audiences of all ages, with a timeless and beloved story that welcomes both longtime ballet lovers and those discovering it for the first time.”

The Sleeping Beauty begins with the christening of Princess Aurora. Fairies are invited to bestow gifts on the young princess, except for the Fairy Carabosse who is forgotten. She is outraged and announces the princess will prick her finger on a spindle and die. The Lilac Fairy soften Carabosse’s curse, so Aurora will not die but shall sleep for 100 years until awakened by a prince’s kiss. A century later, Prince Desire is led to the castle by the Lilac Fairy where he kisses Princess Aurora and breaks the spell. The ballet concludes with a grand wedding celebration attended by fairytale characters.

Boston Ballet’s dancers bring extraordinary artistry to The Sleeping Beauty, meeting the demands of Petipa’s iconic choreography. From the exquisite control required in Aurora’s Rose Adagio to the grandeur of the corps de ballet, the choreography calls for stamina, technicality, and musicality. This production highlights the Company’s ability to move seamlessly between intricate classical vocabulary and layered storytelling.
