Lowell Woman Busted in CVS Parking Lot With Multiple Crack Pipes

Watertown Police arrested a Lowell woman who was caught with crack pipes in her car. While patrolling the municipal lot behind CVS on Aug. 4, at 6:05 p.m. an officer noticed a car sitting alone in the back of the parking lot, said Watertown Police Lt. James O’Connor. “As the police car drove by the operator looked at the officer looked shocked and lunged toward the center console,” O’Connor said. “The officer spoke with the woman and observed drug paraphernalia, including glass pipes with burn marks on them.”

Committee Overseeing School Projects Concerned with Rising Construction Costs

Members of the School Building Committee worry about controlling the costs in Watertown’s three elementary school building projects in a climate with a competitive construction industry and international tariff wars. The projects include brand new schools at Hosmer and Cunniff elementary schools and a major renovation and addition at Lowell Elementary School. At least one member was bothered that Watertown may have missed an opportunity to keep the projects on budget using an alternative to the typical construction model. The design firm, Ai3 Architects, have nearly completed the design development phase (the second of three major phases before construction) and the costs are currently being estimated.

Watertown Library Displaying Newly Restored Map from 1856

A newly restored map of Middlesex County from 1856 now hangs on the second floor of the Watertown Free Public Library. A piece of history now hangs on the second floor of the Watertown Free Public Library, near the study area and computers. The map of Middlesex County dates to 1856, and was recently restored as part of the library’s effort to preserve the town’s history. The map shows the outlines of the communities of Middlesex County and measures about 5 feet by 5 feet. It was created by Henry Francis Walling who served as “Superintendent of the State Map” for Massachusetts.

Community Input Sought on Proposed Recreational Marijuana Facility

The group applying to operate an adult use marijuana facility in Watertown will host a community meeting to provide information about the facility to the public, and to get input. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019 in the Third Floor Conference Room in Town Hall at 6:30 p.m.

Natural Selections, applying as NS AJO Holdings Inc., has already been approved to run a medical marijuana facility at 23 Elm St. in Watertown, and now seeks to also sell for adult use (also called recreational use). To be approved, the applicants must get a special permit approved by the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Town Council must agree to a host community agreement and the state’s Cannabis Control Commission must approve it.

NEW LOCATION: Final Summer Concert Features Country Band & National Farmers Market Week

Southbound Train will perform in the last Watertown Summer Concert of the year. NOTE: Wednesday’s rain will move the final Watertown Summer Concert indoors in the Watertown Free Public Library. Earlier, Town officials planned to hold it outside, but the decision was changed. Head down to Saltonstall Park Wednesday to see the last free summer concert of the year, and celebrate National Farmers Market Week at Watertown’s own market. The seven-piece country band Southbound Train will perform high energy, vocal-oriented songs, both past and present.
