Watertown lost not one, but two public servants during recent weeks. While the death of Watertown Literacy Coordinator Allison Donovan made headlines around the region, Watertown also lost Town Treasurer Nancy Heffernan. Heffernan, who worked in town for two years, died unexpectedly on Feb. 4 at the age of 59. She lived in Woburn.

The first meeting of the Community Preservation Committee will take place on Feb. 21, 2019. The committee was formed after Watertown voters passed the Community Preservation Act in November 2016. The CPA raises money through a 2 percent surcharge on local property tax bills, and the funds can be used in three areas: recreation/open space, affordable housing and historic preservation. The Community Preservation Committee will look at potential places to use the Community Preservation funds and will propose a list of projects.

Allison Donovan Watertown Public School’s K-8 Literacy Coordinator and long-time educator, died after being hit in a hit-and-run incident. The following information was provided by the Middlesex District Attorney’s office:
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, Somerville Chief of Police David Fallon and Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone today announced that Edward Clark, 55, of Norwood, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death, in connection with the fatal hit-and-run that occurred on Powder House Boulevard on February 8. The preliminary investigation suggests at approximately 7:16 p.m. Clark was allegedly operating a 2003 black Ford F150 pick-up truck traveling eastbound on Powder House Boulevard, when he allegedly struck two females, who were in the crosswalk at the intersection of Powder House Boulevard and Hardan Road, before fleeing the scene. Somerville Police subsequently responded and both women were transported to area hospitals. Allison Donovan, 40, of Somerville, was transported to Mount Auburn Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Watertown senior Mange Camara won the 55-meter dash and the 300 meters at the MIAA Div. 5 Meet Wednesday. BOSTON — Watertown’s Track and Field team took on the best athletes from around Massachusetts and two seniors showed they are among the best in the Bay State at the MIAA Div. 5 Indoor Track Meet. Sprinter Mange Camara took two firsts, and high jumper Abbi Peterson finished second at the Division Meet, held at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center on Wednesday.
Historical interpreter Bil Lewis will portray President James Madison at the Watertown Free Public Library. Former U.S. President James Madison will be the guest at the next Democracy Talks at the Watertown Free Public Library. Historical interpreter Bil Lewis will present, in character, “James Madison and the Coming of Age of the U.S.” on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Watertown Savings Bank Room.
The suspect arrested for a string of home break-ins around the Boston area was charged with one offense in Watertown, but Police Chief Michael Lawn said he expects the suspect to be charged in connection with more of the recent burglaries. The most recent string of break-ins in Watertown took place on Feb. 1, 2019, but dozens of break-ins have occurred in town. During three of the most recent burglaries, residents were there when their homes were broken into. “Since the end of September we have had approximately 24 residential burglaries and home breaks in town.
