Supporters of CPA Win the Second Time Around, See How Your Precinct Voted

The second time was the charm for proponents of the Community Preservation Act in Watertown, which won with nearly 60 percent of the vote on Tuesday. 

The ballot question will create a fund for projects in three areas: affordable housing, open space and historic preservation. Jennifer Van Campen, one of the leaders of Invest in Watertown, the group that put the CPA on the ballot, said she was confident going into election. “I actually welt that we were going to win all along,” Van Campen said. The confidence came despite the fact Watertown voters rejected the CPA in 2005. Also, there was also an active “No” campaign from the Concerned Watertown Homeowners, who funding mechanism because it would hurt families and residents struggling to afford living in town.

The votes have been tallied, and the results are in. See how your friends and neighbors voted for president, on legalizing marijuana and other state ballot questions. While Donald Trump claimed victory in the race for President, Hillary Clinton took top rung in Watertown with 71 percent of the vote. Her best precinct was Precinct 10, on the Westside, where she got 1,366 votes. The 10th precinct was also Trump’s best, with 496.

List of Watertown Streets to be Repaired in 2017 Announced by DPW

Several streets made the list for road repairs in 2017 presented by Department of Public Works officials and approved by the Town Council’s Public Works Committee. Each year, the town tackles road repairs on multiple streets around town. Watertown devotes $2.5 million to road and sidewalk repairs annually, but the money does not go just to the worst roads. Some on the list are among the most dire need of repair, others can avoid major problems down the line by doing some minor repairs now, said Rick Benevento, president of WorldTech, the town’s consultant for road projects. The DPW uses a pavement management system developed by WorldTech to come up with the list.

WHS Sports: Golf Team Honored for Sportsmanship, Volleyball Plays in Tourney

The Watertown High School golf team may not have had its best season in terms of wins and losses, but the players still received statewide recognition. Longtime WHS golf coach Jim Travers told the Boston Globe that this year’s golf team was one of his favorites. The 2016 golf team received the MIAA’s Sportsmanship Award for Div. 3 schools. The team had a lot of newcomers because the Raiders lost so many players to graduation that they did not have enough experienced players to field a team for Middlesex League matches.

Police Log: Man Busted for 4th OUI, New York Arsonist Arrested

The following information was provided by the Watertown Police Department. Arrests
Oct. 24, 2:30 p.m.: Police received information that a man from Watertown was wanted on a warrant out of New York City for arson related charges. Watertown Police confirmed that New York officials wanted to extradite the man for those charges. The 37-year-old Watertown man was arrested on a fugitive from justice charges and was transferred to New York.

Watertown Voter Guide: The CPA, Presidential Race & State Ballot Questions

After months of campaigning, the 2016 Presidential election is nearly here, plus Watertown voters have state and local ballot questions to consider on Tuesday, Nov. 8. 

Polls open at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, and remain open until 8 p.m. Then the ballots are taken to Town Hall and precinct results could come as early as 8:30 p.m., but in the past the last precincts have not been finalized until around 10 p.m.

On the top of the ballot is the candidates for president. Along with the two major party candidates – Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump – are Libertarian Gary Johnson and Green-Rainbow Party candidate Jill Stein. There are five other offices up for election this year in town, but little has been heard about these races because they are uncontested.
