Watertown Football Team Wins Home Opener Over Plymouth South

The Watertown Hight School football team took down Plymouth South 24-6 Friday night in an non-league game that could be very helpful in the Raiders’ efforts to get back into the playoffs. Watertown improved to 2-0 on the season and the team was led once again by the feet and arms of senior quarterback Deon Smith. Smith drove down the field on the Raiders’ first possession for the opening score at Victory Field. Much of the yardage came from Smith’s running, but senior Vasken Kebabjian picked up a good chunk on a run of his own. The touchdown came on a run around the left side by Smith from five yards out.

Debate Continues on Whether to Put up Temporary Lights at Arsenal Park

Town Councilors were not ready to approve having temporary lights at Arsenal Park to help the Watertown Youth Soccer program deal with its growing number of players.

On Tuesday night, the Town Council discussed putting the lights at the park, but the majority felt that there are too many questions remaining to give approval. Watertown Youth Soccer has 669 players, from 600 families, in the program, said President Mark Leonard. That number is up from 400 players three years ago, and the program does not have enough field space for all the teams, Leonard said. After discussing where temporary lights could go in town, the Human Services subcommittee looked at Arsenal Park as the best place, Councilor Aaron Dushku, a member of the Human Services subcommittee said. While the lights would be for the soccer program, other youth sports would benefit because it would free up other fields, he added.

Watertown Police Officer Running from Springfield to Boston for Charity

When Brandon O’Neill wakes up Friday morning, instead of getting ready to patrol the streets of Watertown he will get ready for a run – one which will take more than a day and cover 106 miles. O’Neill, who has been on the Watertown Police Department for six years, will take part in theSpringfield Ride to Remember. This is the fourth ride, which started to raise public awareness of officers who have died in the line of duty, and to raise funds for the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial in Boston. This year’s ride is dedicated to Officer Ronald Tarentino, Jr. of the Auburn Police and Mass. State Trooper Thomas Clardy, both of whom died in the course of duty in 2016.

Town Council Clears Way for Sale of Former East Branch Library

After many years of trying to lease the former East Branch Library, the Town Council voted Tuesday night to seek proposals to sell the property on Mt. Auburn Street. The vote was 8-1 to approve seeking proposals, with Councilor Michael Dattoli voting against the proposal. The minimum bid would be $1 million, said Assistant Town Manager Steve Magoon. For some Councilors, the decision was a reversal of what they had pushed for before.
