What the Helicopter is Going on in Watertown!?

Many Watertown residents were rudely awakened Sunday morning by a helicopter flying back and forth over town around 6:30 a.m. Watertown Police Chief Michael Lawn was able to shed a bit of light on the situation. While the why remains kind of vague, Lawn had some information. “We have received calls all weekend on this as well. We called Logan and were informed that it was an ‘approved” mission,’ Lawn said. “That’s all we know and we’re not told anymore.

Expect a Lot of Rain for Over the Next Few Days from Tropical Storm Hermine

While it appears Watertown will not feel the wrath of Hermine, the former hurricane will still have a big impact on the weather this week as it parks off shore. The storm is forecast to stay off the south coast of New England, and rain and thunderstorms are expected to start tonight and last through Wednesday. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecast calls for rain to start after midnight tonight, and showers and possible heavy downpours are expected through Labor Day, with a chance of thunderstorms after 11 a.m.

Winds will not be too strong, with winds 14-18 mph through the next few days and gusts up to 28 mph, according to the NWS forecast. The Cape, Islands and south coast of New England, however, will get some storm impact. In Watertown, the rain and thunderstorms continue Monday night and could continue through about 10 a.m. Tuesday.

OBIT: John G. Demos, 76, Founder of Demos Restaurant

The founder of Demos Restaurant on Mt. Auburn Street, John G. Demos, passed away at his Sudbury home on Sept. 1, 2016 at the age of 76 after battling cancer, according to Duckett Funeral Home. He opened his first restaurant in Boston and opened Demos in Watertown in 1971. John G. Demos, 76, passed away peacefully Thursday, September 1, 2016 at home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Police Log: Man Caught Breaking Into a Car, Adele Fan Scammed

The following information was provided by the Watertown Police Department. Arrests
Aug. 22, 11:10 p.m.: A resident of Laurel Street heard a noise outside and looked out to see a man looking into parked cars. The man, who was wearing a dark shirt, was seen going into the passenger side of a vehicle and appeared to be rummaging through it. The owner of the vehicle confirmed the center console was open and a small amount of money was missing.

Teachers, Students & Police Team Up to Teach Nonviolence to Watertown Staff

Crammed into a small conference room at the Westin Hotel in Waltham Thursday, a group of teachers took part in the first of its kind professional training where students joined other teachers and police officers to demonstrate the principles of Martin Luther King Jr.’s non-violence approach to conflict resolution. The Kingian Nonviolence Training was one of the sessions teachers and staff of the Watertown Public Schools could select as part of their professional training during the first two days back at work this year. The first of three trainings on Thursday was attended by teachers from all levels, special education and English Language Learner (formerly ESL) teachers, a dean of students and a reading specialist. Many said they hoped to find ways to resolve conflicts in their classes, both between students and with themselves and students. When conflict arises sometimes people have to resist their first reaction, said Harold Physic, a Watertown Police officer who helped lead the professional training.

Hurricane Could Wash Out Labor Day Weekend & Trash Collection Info

Hurricane Hermine is forecast to be off-shore this weekend, which could make for a rainy, windy Labor Day. The National Weather Service has a Hazardous Weather Outlook which says the hurricane could hit Southern New England from Sunday into Tuesday with rain and strong winds. The track of the storm, however, remains uncertain, so the impact may change. Due to the Labor Day holiday, trash collection in Watertown will be pushed back a day, so those normally with Monday pickup will be Tuesday, etc. Also, Town Hall and the Watertown Free Public Library will be closed for the holiday.
