Candidates for Council President, At-Large Councilors Air Views

Sustainable Watertown hosted the second of two Town Council Candidate Forums Monday night, this time featuring the candidates for Council President and Councilors At-Large. Moderator Karen McDonald asked questions put together by members of Sustainable Watertown, a citizens group focused on issues including development, transportation and the environment. The election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3. Attending the forum at the Apartments at Coolidge School on Monday were Candidates for Town Council President – incumbent Mark Sideris and former president Clyde Younger – along with those running for Concilor At-Large – incumbent Tony Palomba, challenger Michael Dattoli, challenger Patryce Georgopoulos, incumbent Susan Falkoff and incumbent Aaron Dushku.

Win Over Wilmington Earns Watertown a Tie for Longest Streak

Winning has become a tradition for the Watertown field hockey team, so much so that the Raiders are now tied for the longest unbeaten streak in American high school history. 

Monday evening, Watertown beat Wilmington 5-0 and improved to 15-0 on the season. The win also moved the unbeaten streak to 153, which ties the record set by Eastern High School of Voorhees, N.J from 1999-2005. Wilmington did not just lie down for the Raiders. They kept Watertown off the board for the first 21 minutes, before senior Christa Knell scored what would be the game winner and streak tier, according to the Boston Globe report. Senior Michaela Antonellis and junior Kourtney Kennedy each scored twice in the win.

Watertown Boy Using His Cancer Diagnosis as an Inspiration for Good

Nov. 3 was a bad day for Watertown’s Gabriel Aljalian and his family. That was the date in 2012 when, at the age of 3, Gabriel was diagnosed with leukemia. Now, he wants to turn it into one full of acts of kindness. 

Despite facing a deadly disease, Gabriel always found a way to smile and let his “brave and bright spirit shine through,” said his mother Natasha. “Inevitably, this time of year, we start to see diagnosis date closing in on the calendar.  We wanted to change the meaning of this day – and change it from a dark and sad one to a happy one that helps spread light and happiness,” said Natasha, who has lived in Watertown for 16 years with her husband Arakel, the pastor of St.

Lexus of Watertown Leading Event to Raise Money to Fight Breast Cancer

A group of Massachusetts business leaders committed to fight breast cancer recently gathered at Lexus of Watertown for the first-ever Drive to End Breast Cancer event. 

The event kicked-off the Susan G. Komen Massachusetts Pink Tie Guys campaign, presented by Lexus of Watertown. Pink Tie Guys are an exclusive group of local men who are committed to the fight against breast cancer in Massachusetts, according to an announcement send by Lexus of Watertown. These community leaders will demonstrate their commitment by raising a minimum of $1,008 for Komen Massachusetts, representing the 1 in 8 women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. WEEI Morning Show co-host John Dennis, who is a friend and customer of General Manager of Lexus of Watertown Vincent Liuzzi, also came down to lend his support. “We have heard so many stories from our employees and customers about how breast cancer has affected their families,” Liuzzi said. “Lexus of Watertown is proud to partner with Susan G. Komen Massachusetts Pink Tie Guys to support these families during treatments.

See What the District Council Hopefuls Said at the Candidates Forum

The candidates for district councilors made their case at a Candidates Forum hosted by Sustainable Watertown on Sunday evening. The hopefuls for the council seats, which each represent one quarter of Watertown, talked about issues such as development, the environment and traffic, among other subjects. These are some of the issues that are most important to members of the citizen-run Sustainable Watertown. The candidates are:

District A (Precincts 1-3; East Watertown) – incumbent Angeline Kounelis and challenger Bob Erickson
District B (Precincts 4-6; East of Common and Spring streets to School Street and South of the Charles River) – incumbent Cecilia Lenk and challenger Lisa Feltner
District C (Precincts 7-9; West of Common and Spring streets to Lexington Street) – incumbent Vincent Piccirilli and challenger Rossella Mercuri
District D (Precincts 10-12, West Watertown) – incumbent Ken Woodland

Development
Development has been the top issue in Watertown for the past two years, and moderator Pia Owens asked each about their views about whether the town should implement limits on commercial building square footage, frontage and setbacks. Piccirilli said the new rules in the Design Guidelines and Comprehensive Plans seek to create storefronts like you might have seen in the early 20th century where people can walk the sidewalks and window shop.

League of Women Voters Forum Features All Candidates in the Town Election

The League of Women voters will host a candidates forum for candidates in all races on the ballot for the Nov. 3 Watertown Town Election. The Candidates Forum will be held on Sunday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. in the Watertown Savings Bank Room at the Watertown Free Public Library. This is a chance to hear from all candidates running for Town Council President, Councilor-at-Large, District Councilor, School Committee, and Library Trustee.
