The Raiders toppled Stoneham in the first Middlesex League game of the year. 

Watertown won 29-14, led by quarterback Nick Giordano, who threw for 244 yards and three touchdowns, according to the lengthy account in the Boston Herald (read the whole story here). The Raiders improved to 3-0 on the season. Watertown plays a rare Thursday night game on Oct. 2 when the team hosts Wakefield at 7 p.m. at Victory Field.

Police Log: Thieves Caught on Camera, iPhones Taken from Park

Sept. 16, 6:42 p.m.: Police were send to Main Street for a report of a man who was possibly intoxicated. They found a man who was taken into protective custody because he was intoxicated and they discovered he had a warrant. The 53-year-old man from Newton was arrested on the warrant from Boston District Court for larceny.

If you drive by Watertown High School you will notice some large numbers posted in the window. These signify the success of the Watertown field hockey team. The numbers are both large in size – around five feet high – and what the stand for – the Raiders unbeaten streak. On Thursday the number “121” was displayed but Athletic Director Michael Lahiff will have to add another 2 after Watertown defeated Lincoln-Sudbury 7-0 on Thursday afternoon. The game was well in hand after at halftime, when the Raiders held a 5-0.

You may have noticed that the Tufts Health Plan building on Mt. Auburn Street has been lit up purple this week. The employees have been donning purple outfits too. The company is once again observing World Alzheimer’s Month with activities to help bring an end to the disease. Over the past week, employees from all locations wore purple to raise awareness and show support for current sufferers and their caregivers.

Find Out the Next Step for the Victory Field Project

Having heard from the public about the proposed renovation of the track area of Victory Field, the Town Council has asked for revisions and will hold a meeting to discuss the project soon. At Monday’s Town Council meeting Town Council President Mark Sideris announced the next steps for Phase 2 of the Victory Field renovation. The proposed project includes replacement of the grass with artificial turf, a new track, resurfacing the tennis courts and the tot lot, addition of lights to the track and replacement lights on the courts. Also, a multi-use court would be added where basketball and street hockey could be played, and a new parking area would be created. Sideris said he and other councilors attended the two public meetings and heard the input from residents.

New Spot Opening Where People Can Learn to Create

The Watertown Free Public Library’s latest endeavor will provide residents with a place to learn how to use equipment and technology to create their own crafts and other projects. Dubbed HATCH, the WPFL’s makerspace will open in the Arsenal Project in October, said Assistant Library Director Caitlin Browne. “It will be an exploratory space where people can play with (equipment), and other’s will have the opportunity to learn from people who have experience using it,” Browne said. Equipment will be added over time, but HATCH will begin with a 3-D printer, sewing machines, a screen printing press, a variety of electronics to experiment with, and a variety of crafting supplies. One of the items that will be available will be Arduino, which are small microprocessors that can be programed to do different things.

Watertown Family Robbed at Gun Point by 2 Masked Men

Two men robbed a family at gunpoint, forcing themselves into their home and demanded they give them money. On Sept. 21, shortly after midnight, a couple and their young child parked in the garage at 170 Main Street. As they got into the elevator and the doors were closing a man stuck his hand inside to make the doors open and pointed a gun at them, according to Watertown Police Lt. Michael Lawn. “Two individuals dressed all in black with black masks made take them up to their apartment,” Lawn said.

Celebration for Mural that Adorns History-Filled Building

What used to be a dingy wall overlooking a small parking lot, now beams with color from a mural painted by Watertown teens over the summer. On Sunday, Sept. 21, a group came to dedicate “Tapestry of Cultures,” which is on the side of the a building along Baptist Walk. Alan Dana, whose grandfather and great uncle bought the building in the 1910s, said the mural is a big improvement. “It was a blank wall and it had some graffiti,” Dana said.
