Ronald Webber

Ronald James Webber of Watertown passed away peacefully on October 12th, 2022 in the Newton-Wellesley Center for Alzheimer’s Care from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He was born in Austin, Texas, in 1941 and lived on a ranch in Pflugerville, Texas, with his parents and four siblings. The family moved to Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1948 and to Groton, Massachusetts, in 1950. He attended school in Groton and then attended the Cambridge School of Weston and Harvard University. After graduating from Harvard he attended Northeastern University as a graduate student in mathematics.

Screening of “My Name is Pauli Murray” Will be Followed by Discussion

The award-winning documentary “My Name is Pauli Murray” will be shown on Sunday, October 23 at 2 p.m. at the Watertown Free Public Library. The film portrays the Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray, whose ideas strongly influenced Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s campaign for gender equality and Thurgood Marshall’s civil rights arguments. The Rev. Dr. Murray was a non-binary Black activist, groundbreaking legal scholar, poet, and Episcopal priest who lived for a time in Greater Boston. 

The 2 p.m. screening will be hosted at the library by the Church of the Good Shepherd, Watertown. A post-screening discussion will be led by the Rev. Andrew Goldhor and the Rev. Dr. Yolanda Rolle, Youth and Young Adult Missioner in the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts. The Rev. Dr. Rolle has strong ties to Emmanual Church in Boston, which the Rev. Dr. Murray considered their spiritual home.

A Nod to the Watertown Boys & Girls Club Alumni as the Club Celebrates 50 Years

As the Watertown Boys & Girls Club (WBGC) approaches its 50th anniversary Gala celebration on October 28, 2022, the list of those who have contributed to the Club’s success is long. As part of the celebration, the last two executive directors Renee Gaudette and Allen Gallagher, who shepherded the Club for more than 30 years consecutively, recollected some of those who helped make the Club such a welcome resource for the children and teens of Watertown. The list includes folks who guided the kids every day, who have donated their time, talent, and treasure, and even some of the notable Club kids. Health Department Running Flu Shot Clinic for Residents 18+

The Watertown Health Department will be offering influenza vaccine to Watertown Residents (age 18+) on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2022 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Watertown Free Public Library, Watertown Savings Bank Meeting Room. Please register for your appointment and secure your dose. The clinic is open to everyone with or without insurance. Please bring your health insurance card(s) with you (if you have insurance).

City Manager Seeking Applicants for Residents’ Advisory Committee

City Manager George J. Proakis is seeking Watertown residents interested in serving on the Residents’ Advisory Committee.  

The Committee is being formed per the City Charter – Section 3-7 Residents’ Advisory Committee:  

“The city manager shall establish a Residents’ Advisory Committee to assist with recruitment, evaluation, and selection of candidates for appointment to multiple-member bodies. In making appointments to multiple-member bodies, the city manager shall seek to appoint individuals with relevant expertise or experience. The city manager shall work with the Residents’ Advisory Committee to establish policies and practices to actively encourage a diverse pool of applicants for multiple-member bodies. The city manager and Residents’ Advisory Committee shall recognize the importance of diversity in appointments, including, but not limited to, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, and ethnicity.”
