Father’s Day Card Making Events at Watertown Mall

Father’s Day is on Sunday, June 16. With it being just around the corner, the Watertown Mall is here to help if you don’t know what to get dad yet. Make your dad, grandfather, step-dad, or any other special guy in your life a card at the mall. The Watertown Mall will provide card templates as well as decorating and coloring supplies. While you’re here, look for dad’s gift at some of our stores such as Best Buy, Target, Work ‘N Gear or take him to lunch/dinner at Joyful Garden.

OBIT: Katherine McCourt, 102, 1935 WHS Grad, Raised Big Family

A Funeral Mass for Katherine M. (Broderick) McCourt, 102, of Londonderry N.H., formerly of Watertown, will be held on Tuesday, June 11, in the Church of Saint Patrick, 212 Main St., Watertown. 

Mrs. McCourt, the only child of the late John and Catherine (Feeney) Broderick, was born in Everett days after the United States entered World War I. She soon moved to Watertown, where she attended Hosmer Elementary School, East Junior High School, and then Watertown High School, graduating in 1935. As a result of her parents’ hard work and savings, she was able to further her education at Bryant & Stratton Commercial School where she completed the Secretarial Program in 1936. Upon graduation, she took a job at the John McCourt Company, a construction firm started by its namesake in 1893. There she met the founder’s grandson, Frank McCourt, who soon after proposed to her during his active military service. After Pearl Harbor, the two moved up their wedding to Christmas Day 1941 so that he could fight in World War II without losing the love of his life.

James DeMarco grew up in Watertown and became a goaltender at age 5. It’s his life’s passion to stand between the pipes and keep the puck out of the net. Combining this with the love of cartooning, Small Saves emerged in 1991 and took on a life of his own. “To play goal–then come home and draw Small Saves — is my ideal definition of a good day.”

Find Out About the Bus Priority Lanes on Mt. Auburn St. at Meeting

Buses like this one on the 71 bus have been given priority heading toward Harvard Square on Mt. Auburn Street in the new Cambridge-Watertown Bus Priority Pilot program. The following information was provided by the Town of Watertown:

Did you know that more than half of all commuters using Mt. Auburn Street during rush hour are riding the bus? 

Watertown and Cambridge, working with the MBTA and DCR, created a bus priority lane on Mt. Auburn Street for the 71 and 73 buses, between Cottage Street in Watertown and Fresh Pond Parkway in Cambridge, to help move buses faster. Extensive data collection of the before and after conditions will be presented at a meeting on:

Watertown Recreation Starting Pickleball League

The Watertown Recreation Department will start a pickleball league in June. Pickleball is a sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It is played on a court the size of a badminton court with a slightly adjusted tennis net. Players use large paddle and a plastic ball with holes in it. It can be played in singles or doubles format.
