Watertown Celebrates Charter Day by Ringing Church Bells

Thursday, Sept. 7 is Charter Day, which celebrates the day that Watertown, Boston and Dorchester each officially received their present names. In Watertown, the occasion will be celebrated with the ringing of bells in WatertownS Square. 

The Historical Society of Watertown sent out the following announcement:

The Partnership of the Historic Bostons celebrates Charter Day each September with a variety of historical events which this year includes a joyous ringing of church bells in the three towns that received their present names on September 7, 1630: Boston, Dorchester, and our own Watertown. Redeemer Fellowship Church at 111 Mt. Auburn Street (and the corner of Phillips Street) and the Church of the Good Shepherd, 9 Russell Ave.

Lane Reductions on the Mass. Pike This Weekend for Road Work

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) announced that due to ongoing toll demolition and road reconstruction operations, there will off-peak, temporary lane reductions this weekend on I-90 (the Massachusetts Turnpike) westbound in the immediate vicinity of the Allston/Brighton Viaduct. MassDOT sent out the following statement:

These off-peak traffic impacts will have capacity reduced to one lane of travel at times and will allow crews and contractors to safely and effectively continue construction work at the former toll plaza location which is being reconstructed to allow for normal highway travel. The full list of traffic impacts is as follows:

From 9 p.m., through 11 p.m., on Friday, September 8, I-90 westbound in the area of the Allston/Brighton toll plaza will be reduced from three to two lanes of travel. From 11 p.m., on Friday, September 8, through 8 a.m., on Saturday, September 9, I-90 westbound in the area of the Allston/Brighton toll plaza will be reduced from two to one lane of travel. From 8 a.m., through 11 p.m., on Saturday, September 9, I-90 westbound in the area of the Allston/Brighton toll plaza will then have two lanes of travel
From 11 p.m., on Saturday, September 9, through 5 a.m., on Sunday, September 10, I-90 westbound in the area of the Allston/Brighton toll plaza will be reduced from two to one lane of travel.

Tufts Health Plan Pledges to Advance Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace

Tufts Health Plan’s president and CEO Tom Croswell has joined a growing coalition of CEOs across the U.S. pledging to advance diversity and inclusion in the workplace, the company announce in a press release. Croswell joins more than 270 CEOs nationwide committing themselves – and the organizations they lead – to take action to cultivate a workplace where diverse perspectives and experiences are welcomed and respected, and where employees feel encouraged to discuss diversity and inclusion. 
“Inclusion has the power to generate opportunities where none previously existed – it can lead to innovation, in business, and in our personal lives,” said Tom Croswell, Tufts Health Plan president and CEO. “It also can help to lessen or eliminate health or cultural disparities. For those reasons and more it’s why we at Tufts Health Plan are passionate about it.”
Croswell continued, “We can’t do this work by ourselves. All of us together – through creative partnerships, hard work, and full on community engagement – can make it happen.

Watertown Family Network Playgroups Start in Late September

The Watertown Family Network will offer playgroups for all ages starting the second week of September at 30 Common St. and various other locations throughout town. Parents can sign their children up for free playgroups which offer structured and unstructured play, art experiences, crafts, circle time and snack. Also in September, WFN will offer programs such as Grandparent Day at Brigham House, A Tour of the Watertown Saving Bank, a Back to School Morning at the Watertown Mall on Nutrition and a Stroller Walk along the historical sites of Watertown.
