Events for Children and Adults in June at the Watertown Mall

The Watertown Mall invites the public to events focused on science, summertime and keeping active this June.

Mad Science
Mad Science of North Boston presents “Make UV Ray Bracelets and Keychains” on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 from 1-3 p.m.! Join instructors for a step by step demonstration and instruction to make your own bracelet or keychain using UV ray beads! Learn the power of sunlight and watch white beads change to colored when taken outside the building. The beads contain pigments which react with ultraviolet light from the sun, even on a cloudy day. Children are invited to come get creative and make their own color changing bracelet or keychain!

Daisy Troop from Cunniff School Donates Stuffed Animals to Police

Girl Scout Daisy Troop 62586, from the Cunniff School, donated stuffed animals, toys, art supplies and books they collected to create S.A.F.E. (stuffed animals for emergencies) boxes for the Watertown Police Department, according to a troop leader. Officer Kerilyn Amedio then came to our meeting to tell us about being a police officer, and the girls presented her with their donations. Back row-left to right-

Art Show, Birthday Party and Much More at the Senior Center in June

In June, the Watertown Senior Center has an Art Show, the Senior Center Birthday Party and self-defense training, along with all the many usual offerings. The Watertown Senior Center and Council on Aging sent out the following monthly newsletter:

June Notes from the Director – Thank you friends, volunteers and Yard Sale supporters! The Yard Sale was a great success! Over 40 dedicated volunteers assisted with collecting, sorting and setting-up of the sale, and at the end of the event, a wonderful team of volunteers from the Watertown Community Foundation’s Watertown Helps Out Day assisted in breaking down and cleaning up. We couldn’t have had such a great day without everyone’s support!

Local Groups Hosts Second Watertown Welcomes Immigrants Forum

Several local groups will team up to present the second forum called Watertown Welcomes Immigrants. The group will host a forum with several speakers to speak about issues facing immigrants, sanctuary communities and more at the event on Sunday, June 4 from 2-4 p.m. at First Parish Church, 35 Church St. in Watertown. The group sent out the following announcement:

First Time Candidate Joining Race for Watertown Town Council

A trained family mediator and community organizer, Caroline Bays announced her candidacy for Watertown Councilor-at-Large today. A Watertown resident for 19 years, Caroline and her husband Bill chose Watertown as an affordable, diverse community in which to raise their two children Austin and Susannah. She has organized volunteers and talked with Watertown voters about the issues in local campaigns to elect Watertown Councilors Susan Falkoff and Tony Palomba, State Representative Jon Hecht, State Senator Will Brownsberger, as well as U.S. Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren. “I’ve spoken to people all over Watertown as I have campaigned for other candidates. I’ve talked to people about issues that upset them as well as the many strengths of our community,” says Bays.

Watertown Resident Receives Scholarship from Society of CPAs

The Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants (MSCPA) today announced a Watertown resident has been awarded a scholarship from the MSCPA Educational Foundation. The students will each receive up to $2,500 to further his or her accounting education. The mission of the MSCPA’s Educational Foundation is to inspire and support the next generation ofCPAs in Massachusetts. This year, the Educational Foundation reached its highest level of scholarship funding at $127,500, more than any previous year. Fifty students were selected for the 2017 round of scholarships.

Author Atul Gawande to be Honored by Mosesian Center for the Arts

The Dorothy and Charles Mosesian Center for the Arts is thrilled to announce that for his outstanding contributions to the Medical and Literary fields, Dr. Atul Gawande has been selected as the recipient of the 2017 Charles Mosesian Award for the Arts to be presented at the Mosesian Gala 2017 on Tuesday, June 27. The Mosesian Center for the Arts community wishes to recognize Dr. Gawande for his remarkable, breakthrough writing that has changed the way many of us look at our lives and the end of our lives – his latest book Being Mortal is a New York Times Bestseller. Aside from being a remarkable human being, world renowned surgeon, and music lover, Atul is a supporter of the arts and literary contributor to numerous publications. The evening’s celebration will include a private VIP per-reception on the Branch Line Patio, an interview style discussion with Atul and athenaHealth CEO Jonathan Bush, fine food and drinks from some of our favorite local establishments, and music by Awaaz Do featuring Saraswathi Jones. It promises to be a wonderful evening of inspiring ideas and great music celebrating Atul Gawande and the arts.

OBIT: Harold Hallsworth, 92, Navy Veteran, MBTA Operator

A Funeral Mass for Harold C. Hallsworth will be celebrated on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. in the Church of Saint Patrick, Watertown. Mr. Hallsworth, a son of the late Cecil and Alice (Handy) Hallsworth passed away on Friday May 26, 2017 in the St. Elizabeth Medical Center, after a brief illness. Harold was 92. Harold was born and raised in Brighton.
