The last superintendent’s coffee for this school year is scheduled for April 26, from 9-10:30 a.m. and from 7-8:30 p.m., in the Data and Innovation Lab on the 3rd Floor of the Phillips Building, announced interim Superintendent John Brackett. This coffee will be a superintendents’ coffee. Joining me at each session will be incoming superintendent Dr. Deanne Galdston. We can chat about current issues but will allow ample time for Dr. Galdston to share reflections on her transition and entry plan and to get to meet those in attendance. I hope you will be able to join us.

Watertown Fire Department Gets Grant to Teach Fire Safety to Students, Seniors

Fire Chief Mario Orangio and Fire Inspector Capt. Ryan Nicholson are happy to announce that the Watertown Fire Department has been awarded $5,641 for Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) and $2,996 for Senior SAFE grants. The S.A.F.E. program is a state initiative that provides resources to local fire departments to conduct fire and life safety education programs in grades K-12. The Watertown Fire Department has had a S.A.F.E. program in previous years, but due to a number of reasons we were not able to continue the program. However, we are happy to announce our re-entry into the classroom! The S.A.F.E. program has a proven record of success within the state, and we hope to educate Watertown’s youth on various fire safety topics.

DPW Hosting Styrofoam Recycling Event, Not All Items Will be Taken

Once again, the Watertown Department of Public Works will host a styrofoam recycling event, but there are some changes to what types of styrofoam will be accepted. The DPW put out the following announcement:

Significant Changes in the Collection of Styrofoam! Most polystyrene products are currently not recycled due to the lack of incentive to invest in the compactors and logistical systems required. Due to the low density of polystyrene foam, it is not economical to collect. However, if the waste material goes through an initial compaction process, the material changes density and becomes a recyclable commodity of high value for producers of recycled plastic pellets.

ESSAY: A Man’s Game of Tag with His Son, Others at a Watertown Playground

Playground, by Dean Berlin

So this is it, huh? A lifetime of building a reasonably fit body and observing predator-prey strategies, and here I am: chasing a 5-year around a playground. I’m playing my Son’s favorite game, which is just a variant of tag. Over the years, I’ve introduced increasing subtleties into the game (no tag-backs, a base, a point system, etc.), and for that I’m very proud. Still, here I am, an adult male capable of whatever my LinkedIn says, lurking beneath a blue plastic slide for a child to find me.
