Free Arts and Craft Beer Event Coming to Arsenal Center for the Arts

The Arsenal Center for the Arts to host another outdoor celebration of visual arts, live music and craft brews Friday, Sept. 30 for FREE! The second annual Arts & Drafts will be held at the Arsenal Center for the Arts, on the grounds of the Arsenal on the Charles, 321 Arsenal St. in Watertown and runs from 4 to 9 p.m.

The event features a live public arts project for patrons of all ages, a DJ and live music from Airport, Abbie Barrett Band, and more, and a beer garden with beverages from some of our favorite local breweries. This year’s event will also serve as the center’s annual Membership Meeting and feature essential votes for the organization including a renaming to The Dororthy and Charles Mosesian Center for the Arts, honoring some of the center’s largest donors to date.

Warren Tolman Speaking at Fundraiser for Pro-Community Preservation Act Group

Invest In Watertown invites you to a FUNdraiser! Help bring the Community Preservation Act to Watertown! Invest in Watertown announced it will host a Conversation, Food, and Drink with Warren Tolman. The former State Senator and FOX 25 Commentator will discuss the 2016 Presidential Election. The meeting is Sunday, Oct. 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the new Marriott Residence Inn, 570 Arsenal St.

Check Out the HATCH Maker Expo During the Faire on the Square

HATCH is Watertown’s public makerspace. If you haven’t experienced HATCH yet you’ll want to visit our first ever Maker Expo. We’ll have maker activities, demonstrations of some of our equipment, and exhibits from HATCH skill mentors and local makers. You can find us on the first floor of the library on Saturday, September 24 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. during the Faire on the Square. Special Guest Appearances by HATCH-designed Sumo Robots.

Watertown’s New Special Education Director Speaking at SEPAC Meeting

The Watertown Special Education Parent Advisory Council will host the district’s new special education director during a public meeting on Sept. 28. Watertown SEPAC sent out the following information:

The Watertown SEPAC meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at the Phillips School Conference Room, 30 Common St., from 6-8 p.m.

This meeting will be an informal coffee with our new Director of Special Education, Kathleen Desmarais. Bring your kids – child care, beverages and fresh baked goods will be provided.

See the Line Up for the Local Concert Across America to End Gun Violence

Watertown Citizens announced it is proud to be a co-sponsor of the local Concert Across America to End Gun Violence on Sunday, September 25. The Concert Across America to End Gun Violence is a national initiative sponsored by hundreds of local, state, and national organizations to hold a series of live events coast to coast to “remember the victims of America’s gun violence epidemic.” Watertown Citizens is joining with World in Watertown, Progressive Watertown, and Sustainable Watertown to hold a local concert in Watertown at Saltonstall Park from 1 p.m to 4 p.m.

The Schrodfathers, Boston Arabic Ensemble and Wayne, Isabelle, and Steve Trio will provide the music. There will also be presentations by gun safety advocates and victims of gun violence, including Warren Tolman, Ann-Marie Crowell, Richard Marcus, and L.I.P.S.T.I.C.K who will speak to what we can do to end the gun violence epidemic. Candlelight Vigil for Those Lost to Addiction on Wednesday

Watertown Overcoming Addiction will hold its second annual Candlelight Vigil to remember those lost to drug use and addiction. Last year, hundreds of friends and families of those who lost their battle with substance use, and many others filled St. Patrick’s Church’s Lower Hall. This year’s vigil will be held on Sept. 21, 2016 at 7 p.m. in the Lower Hall at St.

Mount Auburn Hospital Cancer Prevention Clinic Called a Model Program

Mount Auburn Hospital’s Genetics and Cancer Prevention Clinic is pleased to announce its recognition as a model of “Best Practices” by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). The Genetics and Cancer Prevention Clinic, is part of both the Hoffman Breast Center and Division of Oncology. The program is designed for consultation or longitudinal follow-up for high risk patients and/or those with a family history of early onset, multiple, or rare cancers. “We are thrilled and honored that we were chosen from over 615 accredited breast centers from around the country to present the details of our excellent genetics program at the first national NAPBC Best Practices Conference held in Orlando, Florida earlier this year” said Dr. Susan Pories, Medical Director of the Hoffman Breast Center and Chair of the Breast Center Steering Committee. “We believe our program stands out due to two major factors: our organization and providers.”

The Mount Auburn Hospital Genetics and Cancer Prevention Clinic experience begins with a consultation from a highly skilled specialist.  At each visit, the patient will receive:

Personalized cancer risk assessment using computer-based models
Information about genetic testing and use of newer expanded genetic testing panels, if appropriate. Assistance with insurance preauthorization is provided before testing is performed.
