Athenahealth Lays Off 100s of Workers, Closes Satellite Offices

Watertown’s biggest employer and owner of the Arsenal on the Charles complex had big layoffs Thursday and closed offices in other locations. The Boston Business Journal reported that the company laid off 400 people, including some at the Watertown headquarters, and closed offices in San Francisco and Princeton, N.J. The Boston Globe put the layoffs at 500, or 9 percent of the overall workforce. Athenahealth had about 2,300 employees in Watertown. “We do not take the decision to reduce our workforce lightly, but these are necessary changes to enable athenahealth to succeed over the long-term,” the company said in a statement. The job cuts come at the same time that Athenahealth has teamed with the town and the state on a multi-million dollar project based on adding jobs at its Watertown headquarters.

Members of Watertown’s Most Unique Baseball League Visit Mt. Auburn Hospital

Members of the Watertown Challengers League made a recent stop at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge to thank the hospital and CEO Jeanette Clough for their important sponsorship, the hospital announced. The Watertown Challengers League is a division of Little League Baseball that gives youth ages 7-19 with special needs the opportunity to have fun and be a part of a team. Participation is free to each player and includes a uniform, jacket, trophies and an annual banquet thanks to local sponsors. The team is run by Eric Manning (of Watertown), VP of the Watertown Challenger League and his wife Brenda Manning (of Watertown), board member at large and manager of the Watertown Challenger League. The Mannings joined the league five years ago as volunteer coaches aiding their son, Brian Manning (of Watertown) who has cerebral palsy.

Tufts Health Plan HQ Receives Superior Energy Performance Designation

Tufts Health Plan’s Watertown office buildings have received the top designation for superior energy performance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the company announced. “We’re honored to earn the ENERGY STAR for superior energy performance.
