RMUD Ready for Public Hearing After Subcommittee Votes on Amendments

The Regional Mixed Use District proposal is ready for the Town Council to weigh and vote next week after a subcommittee finished wading through dozens of proposed amendments on Tuesday night. The proposal would majorly overhaul of the zoning rules for the area near the east end of Arsenal Street, including the town’s two malls, along with other properties on Arsenal Street, plus parts of Elm Street and Coolidge Avenue. Basically, it would change the zoning form industrial to mixed use, which allows for residential, commercial and office project. Tuesday, the Economic Development and Planning Subcommittee finished its fourth meeting reviewing the proposal and debating which amendments to the zoning to recommend be adopted by the full Town Council. Subcommittee Supports Tall Building at End of Arsenal Street in RMUD

The details of the proposed Regional Mixed Use District, or RMUD, were hashed out by a Town Council subcommittee, and councilors voted to allow the possibility of a tall building being built on top of what is now the Miller’s Ale House. The vote came from the Economic Development and Planning Committee, which met Thursday to continue to make their recommendations for possible amendments to the proposed major zoning change. The full Town Council will discuss and vote on the RMUD at a meeting scheduled for Monday, Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m. in Town Hall. The possibility of building a building of 10 stories or even higher is one of the most controversial parts of the zoning proposal.

Local Business Donates Storm Windows on Historical Society House

The Historical Society of Watertown recently received a dozen storm windows donated by a local business. The Historical Society sent out the following announcement:

Thanks to a generous donation from Stormtite on Belmont Street in Watertown, the 1772 Edmund Fowle House, headquarters of the Historical Society of Watertown, now has 12 storm windows installed on the newer, 1870s section of the house. Having them should not only save on heating bills in the winter, but this summer, the screen section (an improvement over the collapsible screens we have been using) will help eliminate the flying visitors we have become accustomed to in the past. And as you know, insects are a threat to our historic collections. The Society’s goal is to install storm windows on the entire house.

Council Subcommittee Rules on RMUD Borders, Passes on Affordable Housing

A subcommittee of the Town Council met Saturday and debated whether to split up the proposed Regional Mixed Use District (RMUD) on the east end of Arsenal Street, but it decided to hold off on a recommendation on whether to increase the affordable housing requirement for the area. 

The Economic Development and Planning subcommittee went through the proposed amendments to the RMUD, which is currently under consideration by the full Town Council. The zoning change would turn the area where the Arsenal and Watertown malls are located (and other nearby properties) from industrial zoned to one where a mix of residential, retail and office would be allowed. Some residents who have followed the process wanted to split the RMUD in two. Currently, Boylston Properties, which owns the Arsenal Project and other parcels south of Arsenal Street, is working on plans to redevelop the mall. Resident Elodia Thomas said people still have questions on how the zoning would work in the entire district, but have seen a lot already about what Boylston Properties wants to do.

Watertown Belmont Chamber Event at Branch Line Filling Up Quickly

The Watertown Belmont Chamber of Commerce will host a Member Appreciation Celebration at the new Branch Line restaurant, and spots are filling up quickly. Paul Airasian, executive director of the Chamber, said he expects the event to be a “sell out.” The Member Appreciation Celebration will be held on Thursday, Jan. 28 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Branch Line, 321 Arsenal St. (next to Panera in the Arsenal on the Charles)
