Watertown High School Presenting Musical Take on Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales

Watertown High School will present “Into the Woods,” this weekend. The production is a modern, musical twist on the Brothers Grimm Fairy tales. There will be three performances in the Watertown High School Centennial Auditorium, 50 Columbia St., Watertown. The musical includes the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel. These tales are tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife on whom a witch has placed a curse.

YardArt 2022 is Here, Join a Walking Tour of the Exhibits

The YardArt 2022 exhibition is now open for viewing! Beginning March 4, neighbors throughout Watertown are displaying a variety of artful projects on their front yards and porches. Take a walk, ride a bike with friends, or stroll with family to see some of the ‘homegrown creativity’ in Watertown. The citywide exhibit runs through April 3rd.

Small Saves Gets Some Media Attention in This Week’s Comic

James DeMarco grew up in Watertown and became a goaltender at age 5. It’s his life’s passion to stand between the pipes and keep the puck out of the net. Combining this with the love of cartooning Small Saves emerged in 1991 and took on a life of his own. “To play goal–then come home and draw Small Saves — is my ideal definition of a good day.”

Celebrate Spring, Celebrate Community! Yardart is an annual Watertown event sponsored by the Mosesian Arts Center with town-wide home, porch and gallery participation. 

Storefront ArtProjects is showcasing its own ebullient and joyful mix of homegrown and visiting talent in fiber, collage, sculpture, printmaking and painting by 9 adults and 9 children. And 25% of all sales will be donated to help Ukraine. People cross the street to peer in the storefront windows!

Watertown’s Eliza Dushku Attends White House Signing of Bill That Ends Forced Arbitration in Sexual Assault, Harassment Cases

Watertown’s Eliza Dushku visited the White House last week to attend President Biden’s signing of a bill that ends forced arbitration in cases of sexual assault and sexual harassment in the workplace and to allow survivors to file lawsuits in court against perpetrators. Dushku has been outspoken about issue since she went public with her experience on the set of the CBS show Bull, where she said she was sexually harassed by the show’s star. In November 2021, she was one of several women who testified before the House Judiciary Committee. After the signing, Dusku sent out a Tweet saying: “FORCED arbitration FOR sexual harassment & assault is officially OVER!”

When she testified before Congress, Dushku said that now when her name is brought up, it is not for her acting, producing or other work.

Watertown Man Pens Book on History of Popeye Cartoons

Watertown’s Fred Grandinetti recently published a book on Popeye the Sailor. Watertown resident and popular culture historian Fred M. Grandinetti announced that he has written a new book on Popeye the Sailor. Grandinetti has shared his love of Popeye and other classic cartoons on Drawing With Fred, which can be seen on Watertown Cable. The book, however, required additional research. “It took me 3 years to write and I had to re-watch 220 cartoons on YouTube,” Grandinetti told Watertown News.

Watertown Library Has Host of Activities Inspired by “One Book”

In January, the Watertown Free Public Library announced Braiding Sweetgrass, as it’s pick for One Book, One Watertown 2022. Now, the Library is drawing on author Robin Wall Kimmerer’s themes of environmental stewardship and Indigenous wisdom to deliver a full month of workshops, artwork, and music — all designed to complement the book and bring the community together. You are invited! And don’t worry, you don’t have to read Braiding Sweetgrass to participate. (Though it is highly encouraged!) Whether you want to want to radically rethink your relationship to the land, green your energy footprint, or share Indigenous history with your kids – there are so many ways to participate in One Book, One Watertown this year.
