20 Voters to Review Marijuana Ballot Question in Effort Sponsored by Rep. Hecht

A group of Massachusetts residents will review the marijuana ballot question and come up with a statement on the pros and cons of the measure ahead of the November election. The Citizens’ Initiative Review pilot was sponsored by Watertown State Rep. Jonathan Hecht. On July 12, a bipartisan advisory board, which includes former Democratic Governor Michael Dukakis and two high-ranking Republican legislators, unanimously selected the Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act as the question to be considered by 20 Bay State voters during deliberations in August. “We are grateful to our advisory board for their time and insights while selecting the ballot question that will be the focus of the Citizens’ Initiative Review process,” said Hecht. “I look forward to reading the results of the citizen panelists’ deliberations in August and hope that this effort will provide voters across the Commonwealth with insightful, nonpartisan information to aid in their consideration of an important issue.”

The voters will meet at the Atrium School in Watertown from August 25 to 28 and hear from advocates on both sides of the ballot question under review, as well as neutral experts.

Election Poll Workers Needed for Sept. & Nov. 2016 Elections

The Watertown Elections Department is looking for poll workers during this busy upcoming election season, the town announced. 

The State Primary is on Thursday, Sept. 8 and the General Election is on Tuesday, Nov. 8. Poll workers must be registered voters and have the ability to work from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on one or both elections. Y0u can obtain an employment application on the Town of Watertown’s website, www.watertown-ma.gov in the Document Center (top right corner) in the Town Clerk’s Election folder.

Watertown Voters Can Participate in Early Voting in the Presidential Election

Watertown voters who can’t wait until Election Day to cast their votes for President can participate in early voting this fall. 

For the first time this year Massachusetts will allow early voting. In the past, people who could prove they would be unable to get to polls on election day could apply for an absentee ballot, but Town Clerk John Flynn said the new rules allows anyone to get a ballot early. The early voting period will be between Oct. 21 and Nov. 4, 2016.

Attorney Peter Georgiou is kicking off his campaign for Governor’s Council, 3rd District, in Watertown on April 26, 2016, he announced this week. Peter runs a successful worker’s compensation practice in Cambridge. He is running to represent the district that stretches from Brookline, Newton to Shirley and from Chelmsford to Westborough, and includes parts of four counties. Dems Choosing Delegates for National Convention, Including a Caucus in Watertown

If you are interested in having a role in choosing the next President of the United States and participating in a caucus, this weekend could be your chance if you are a Democrat (Republicans will have to wait a few weeks). On Saturday, April 9, Massachusetts Democrats will be holding caucuses to choose who will go to Philadelphia for the Democratic National Convention to represent either Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders, and the Clinton representatives will be chosen in Watertown. The Congressional District Caucuses will be held across the state, with separate locations for each of the main Democratic candidates. For the Fifth Congressional District, the Clinton caucus will be held in the Watertown High School auditorium, 50 Columbia St. in Watertown, while the Sanders caucus will be at Malden High School, 77 Salem St.

Watertown Candidates Find Success in Races for State Committee

Super Tuesday was good for Watertown candidates. Four won their election to represent their party’s state committee, including two with contested races. Watertown Democrat Steve Owens won his race against Boston’s David Kazis with nearly 63 percent of the vote. Owens won 14,163 to 8,362. Republican Steve Aylward of Watertown received 65 percent of the vote and defeated Neil Edward St.

Watertown residents favored Bernie Sanders by a small margin in the Democratic primary, and heavily backed Donald Trump on the Republican side in Tuesday’s Massachusetts Presidential Primary. Sanders won 8 of 12 precincts and came out ahead of Hillary Clinton in Watertown, 4,422 to 4,338 in the unofficial results from Tuesday’s election.  Martin O’Malley received 24 votes and Roque de la Fuente got 14 votes. Trump received 1,223 votes, or 49 percent of the GOP ballots. Marco Rubio narrowly beat John Kasich – 460 to 458 – for the second most votes in town.

Democrats in Watertown will be holding a caucus in the Watertown Savings Bank Room of the Watertown Free Public Library on Sunday, March 13 at 2 p.m. to elect 23 delegates and four alternates to the 2016 Massachusetts Democratic Convention, where Democrats from across the commonwealth will gather to meet fellow activists and hear from elected officials. The convention will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at the Tsongas Center in Lowell. “This year’s caucuses are an opportunity to renew our commitment to the grassroots and elect Democrats up and down the ballot in 2016,” said Massachusetts Democratic Party Chairman, Senator Tom McGee. “Together we will be ready to take on the challenges that lay ahead.” The caucus is open to all registered Democrats in Watertown and the Democratic Party warmly welcomes first-time participants.
